I booked last minute reservation for a walk up ticket to travel travel on the 19:33 service from Kings Cross to Stevenage. This was booked via the website around half an hour before departure.

There was another passenger sat in my reserved seat so I asked them if they would mind moving as the seat reserved.

The person sat in the seat also had a seat reserved for the exact same seat and service. The person showed me their ticket and the seat reservations were identical.

Thankfully there were loads of empty seats so I was able to find a seat and maintain a safe distance from other passenger.

I didn’t think it was possible to double book seats but I am able to provide more detail if there is anyone from LNER on here who wants more details ;)

I had a double booking case myself a few years back when it was Virgin Trains East Coast, IIRC.

@Wallsendmag may want to look into this...

On a recent journey someone was sat in my booked seat but I found a coach with only about 3 people in, so I didn't feel any need to have a discussion with the other passenger, but I'm now wondering if they may have been in their booked seat too!

When enough information has been available for us to investigate, we have always found that one of the ticket holders has changed their reservation and then forgotten that the original was cancelled. This enables a second buyer to reserve that seat. As the original reservation is ‘attached’ to the original ticket they invariably still hold that and then occupy that seat causing this sort of confusion.

The other passenger had an e-ticket although I don't suppose that makes any difference.

Are there any distanced seats left unreserved on LNER mark 4 sets. The 12:25 from Doncaster - Peterborough is very surprisingly showing as full for 1st September having tried all permutations of intermediate stations. Is there a way for me to get on or am I snookered?

On the double Azuma I travelled on yesterday the whole of coach C was unreserved. I think this is the same on the Mark IV sets, it certainly was the case a few weeks ago.

Good question - so if you want to do a relatively short hop journey (of the sort you may well need to do on the spur of the moment as it were) are you technically barred from their trains, or in reality does it not matter?

1st class fares only on that, at a price of £38. Plenty of 1st class seats are available.

The railway doesn't particularly want this custom, but it's very unlikely anyone would try to stop you boarding.

You can reserve at a Travel Centre, TVM , online or with our app up to 5 mins before departure
Handy to know - but presumably not if you turn up at station with a short notice reason to travel but find the train all reserved out?
