I see that on most LNER trains that the pay on the day walk on fare between Edinburgh(EDB) & London (KGX) is £79.20. However, if one were to travel on the same trains and purchase a ticket from EDB > York (YRK), the fare is £16.30 dearer being £95.50 one way. So, I presume one should purchase the fare from Edinburgh to London and just get off at York - if that is your intended destination & save £16.30?

The London fares are cheaper due to the combination of a (super) off peak ticket being offered and single leg pricing. For a return journey tickets to York would work out much cheaper however yes for those travelling one way it would work out cheaper to purchase a ticket to London and finish short at York (although I suspect there may well be ways to make the journey even cheaper but haven't looked into it).

It's certainly not the only journey to see such anomalies.

If making a one-way journey from York to London, it's cheaper to buy a ticket from Leeds - as that is also part of the single leg pricing trial.

A quick glance splitting at Darlington and Northallerton brings the fare to around £75 for a return.
