Need to travel from London to Bristol Temple Meads, via Newbury (and a 4 hour stay in Newbury), on Wednesday 16th January. I have a Young Persons Railcard.

I was planning on getting the 11:18 from London, arriving Newbury 12:12.

I need to leave Newbury at about 5, so was half thinking of going via Westbury to avoid Reading (quieter, cheaper too?). 17:19 gets in at 18:48. Going via Westbury avoids having to double back to Reading which would require an additional single ticket from Newbury to Reading.

What is the cheapest way via this route?

The best I can find is an off peak single at £26.75 (YPR). Is this valid for the break of journey in Newbury?

Advice on the planned route appreciated too - am I wise to opt for going via Westbury rather than Reading?

If need be I can commit to those trains for Advance tickets, my plans won't change.

Thank you in advance.

Looks like the simplest option. In my experience trains towards Exeter and beyond are busier than Bristol Temple Meads services, but I'd expect quite a few to leave at Newbury.

Both Off Peak (SVS) and Super Off Peak (SSS) tickets for London-Bristol permit BoJ, and both have evening peak restrictions. The 1118 from Paddington is valid on both tickets, but the evening restrictions apply:
SVS depart Reading between 0835 and 1710, and from 1901
SSS depart London Paddington between 1010 and 1501, and from 1901

The 1719 from Newbury departs Reading at 1704, so is valid on the SVS but barred on the cheaper SSS. You'd need to leave around 1 to be able to use the SSS this way, so that's not much use.

There's no worthwhile Advances for this journey as far as I can see. However, it's only a couple of quid more to split at Newbury with an Off Peak Day Single London-Newbury and Anytime Single Newbury-Bristol, which would eliminate evening peak concerns if that's any use.

Going via Westbury avoids having to double back to Reading which would require an additional single ticket from Newbury to Reading.

You'd need a return between Reading and Newbury.

There is a service leaves Pad at 1706 which is advertised as Bradford on Avon, but as far as I am aware goes the long way around to Bristol TM. It's not advertised as Bristol TM so as not to confuse people looking for the fast train. It is a stopper, so it is slow, but because of this is off-peak.

The 17.33 Pad - Paighton calls at Newbury, Pewsey and Westbury only, meeting up with a 1910 to Bristol at WSB and a few more alternatives if it is running late.

If you go back to Reading, you will be running into the Evening Peak restrictions at that time.

If you need to go from London to Bristol via Newbury then it's clear that you cannot double back via Reading, so the route via Westbury is the only option when stopping off at Newbury on a London - Bristol Temple Meads ticket.

The break of journey is permitted.

The Super-Off-Peak Single is valid, since: Tickets are valid:

On services timed to depart
London Paddington between 1010
and 1501, and from 1901.

This costs £20.15 with railcard.

The Super Off Peak isn't valid, as OP wishes to resume their journey at Newbury on a train which departs Paddington at 1704 (or 1706 as Flamingo suggests), which requires an Off Peak ticket.

The 18:03 is the direct train via the Heywood curve and having recently used this from Reading to Bath, the cost on an advance was a lot lower than via Swindon.
2 singles would total £29.15 (YPR)

I think it's 1706, anyway! It's around then ;)

Yep!

It's more expensive to use Advances for OP's journey though (plus there are no Advance fares Paddington-Newbury).

Don't you mean the Hawkridge Curve (east to north avoiding Westbury)?
