Could anybody tell me if a London to Grantham (Any Permitted) valid via Nottingham?

Working through the various options:
  • There are no direct trains from St Pancras to Grantham via Nottingham, so it's not automatically permitted.
  • London (Kings Cross) to Grantham via the ECML is 105.25 miles in the eNRT. London (St Pancras) to Nottingham alone is 126.5 miles, so it fails the distance test.
  • Mapped routes are only shown on Map ER, which doesn't include London to Nottingham, except via Grantham, ergo it's not a mapped route.

In other words, no you can't go via Nottingham on a London to Grantham ticket, but it is possible to get a London to Nottingham ticket that's routed via Grantham.

Cheers,

Many thanks. My friend has a season ticket and has had conflicting answers when enquiring so your answer comprehensively answers that one! Strangely he has been told it is valid via Stansted Airport.

That is correct as routes from London to Grantham include London Liverpool Street-Cambridge-Ely-Peterborough-Grantham and London Liverpool Street to Cambridge is allowed via Stansted Airport.

Question folks from a new member..........hi all by the way.

If I buy return tickets from Nottingham to Grantham, Grantham to London, but the timing is such that it would be better for me to travel London to Nottingham, am I entitled to do so?

Reason being it is far cheaper to go from Nottingham via Grantham than Nottingham to London direct; it would be less hassle going from St Pancras direct to Nottingham on the way back. But I don't want to be snared along the way by an eager clippie!

Thanks in advance.

The short answer is no, you would have to travel via Grantham. This is because a Grantham to London ticket is not valid via Nottingham (as noted above), and a Nottingham-Grantham ticket is only valid on the route between those two stations. So you don't have a ticket which covers travel from St Pancras to Nottingham.

No A London - Grantham ticket is not valid from St Pancras - Nottingham direct. That is one of the downsides of splitting - you lose flexibility
