London to Windermere

Hi All,

I'm going to be travelling from London to Windermere on the Monday 14th June returning on Saturday 19th June. I have been looking for a cheaper fair than the eighty or so quid Virgin charge as a standard fare.

Does anyone know any cheaper routes or ticket splits for this route. Last time I took a coach to Birmingham and picked the Train up there but that doesn't even seem much cheaper.

It depends on what is important, time or price?

If you were ok buying Advance tickets you might be good to split at Manchester as TPE do some very cheap Advance fares, and you can normally get some at decent prices between Manchester and London aswell. Failing that East Coast do some very cheap fares and you can cut across from Leeds. Will take longer but may be cheaper.

I would look at the tickets and come up with some ideas but the booking engine used by East Coast / Southern and London Midland (which is far superior to that used by Virgin) is down at the moment so can't look at the details.

Virgin seem to have pretty much abandoned weekday advance fares on the route to Carlisle.

Advance tickets to Manchester are available for £16, and an advance ticket from Manchester to Windermere for £8. This adds over an hour onto the journey.

On the return, advance tickets to Wigan are available for £5.50, then Wigan to London for £17. (There are some cheaper combinations with longer waits.)

East coast are showing some cheap tickets to Leeds on the 14th - £10 advance single. try booking to Huddersfield etc instead.
There are also a few transpennine advance fares from Leeds to Windermere.

The timetable changes last year broke a connection a Lancaster from the Leeds-Morecambe service onto a Windermere train meaning a 70 minute wait now, but if you split at Stevenage you can book Stevenage-Lancaster advance single on the 07:56 from Stevenage (VIA BENTHAM - specify this or you won't get a fare shown) for £12 single - it won't give any fares to Windermenre but I have had them on this route in the past.
