They appear on the TOC's websites. If you don't check at least once per week you might miss vacancies. Some vacancies are Internal only and you would only see them if you already worked for the TOC in another role.

If you're serious about looking I'd check daily or even twice daily as the vacancies sometimes are on and off again in a matter of hours. Personally, I have set all the recruitment pages of the tocs and focs to open up every time I open my Internet to save me typing them all in. It sometimes takes a little longer to loaf up 9 or 10 tabs but had been worth it as the email alerts really are not very good.

As had been said there have been a lot of trainee driver vacancies on in the last few months and is set to continue from what I have heard for a while. It depends which companies you want to work for our which depots you are able to commute to. Usually within 1 hour of your home address.

Northern, DB Schenker, Colas Rail and Freightliner have all had extern vacancies for trainees lately so you've missed a good few. They're just the ones I've seen mentioned here (as I don't take much interest) - there may have been many others!

If you have missed the vacancies for the last few years, how do you think you will get on with seeing the signals?

You need to subscribe with the companies email alerts, this is by far the easiest way to get notified of any vacancies.

Have you thought about applying for other roles on the railways (booking office, guard, dispatch staff ect)? Then you'll be able to apply for internal vacancies when they come up, as well as gaining valuable experience at the same time.

This is easily the best thing to do. Getting into the industry is the hardest part. "Once you are in you are in", as most people say. In other words, once you've got in, you can move to different jobs/companies relatively easy.

I used the following website http://www.traindriver.org. There is a section on jobs and it gets updated every few days. Through this I have managed to secure assessment days at DB Schenker and TPE. I would also do as mentioned previously to join each TOC careers website and they will alert you. There have been loads of other vacancies but in other regions, I think you need to expand you searches as you have missed out on lots.
PS If I'm very lucky and succeed with DB Schenker does anybody know if this allows free train travel for employees with its subsidiaries companies such as Arriva and Gran Central? Not an important factor as to why I want to be a train driver but my wife keeps asking me!
