This video is very interesting:
In the fuel crisis, why isn't lawrie driving lorries?
Basically boils down to the following:
-The government introducing rules without making the necessary investments to enable drivers and companies to meet them. In this case, maximum driving times, but with few places to actually park to rest.(Sounds similar to the mess with PRM in 2020...)
-The government and motorway service area operators not investing in facilities and charging through the nose for them.
-The pay is mediocre, especially compared to the costs of training, etc.

Essentially, in a tale very similar to that of the railways, successive governments have brushed issues under the carpet and made cuts to important facilities/infrastructure that are coming to haunt us. Especially after Brexit. The government seems to be pressing the "deregulation" button, yet cutting regulation arguably in the wrong places (reversing with a trailer), while not addressing the high prices of courses and tests they set as mandatory requirements.

Lots of young people can hardly afford to drive a car, nevermind learn to drive a truck.

Companies have absolutely been exploiting cheap labour to move goods. But at the same time, with national infrastructure in far worse shape than that of our peers, is it even a surprise? The government blames business, but wether they have realised it or not, they pull the levers of policy within which business operates. This is true for any system of government. What they need to do is step up and work with companies to resolve these issues in earnest, working towards a solution that not only works for now, but ensures we never have to get into this situation again. (For example laws on the maximum distance between proper provisioned rest stops, etc)
Interesting to note companies that's begging for drivers are often the ones that's been treating them shabily in the past and as soon as a better offer came up, they left leaving them high and dry.
This is true! The UK treated European drivers very badly as well, so many of them can't be bothered to come back now they have been absorbed by the rest of the European market.
Surprised Pikachu faces all round at the management of the companies who treat their staff terribly and now can't fill vacancies.
I love this, it's so true.
