I was looking at a tread about a ticket that could not be presented (flat battery) but applies also if a ticket is mislaid.

If one loses a ticket before travelling would the correct procedure be to buy a replacement ticket before travelling and later claim a refund ?.

How likely is a refund ?.

A suppose the re-purchasing would not be so easy if the ticket was lost (or phone battery died) after the journey started.

Occurs to me this prompts all sorts of debate over advance fare vs walk up fare. Because the unused ticket probably gets refunded which means the more expensive walk up fare isn't refunded !.

If the unusued ticket is an Advance it doesn't get refunded either.

It depends... if you lose/misplace a ticket you will need to buy a ticket for travel and that ticket is then used and not refundable. If you later find the lost/misplaced ticket you may be able to request a refund if it is a refundable ticket but that refund would be subject to an administration fee, typically of £10.

Thanks. So not totally impossible and would protect one from getting into trouble anyway.

I can see temptation for some would be to avoid forking out more even temporarily and hope for the best.

Happened to me last year - about to set off to Scotland and discovered I was missing an advance ticket for part of my journey (split tickets). No option but to buy another ticket (at a higher price) for that part of the journey. And being an advance meant no refund available. That's life.

As it happens I didn't need to use the ticket to pass through any barriers and it wasn't checked anywhere else either so I could have "got away with it" - but years on this site have taught me it's just not worth the risk.

I prefer e-tickets where available as can save a backup copy of the PDF

I only travel a few times a year and have always preferred physical tickets as I just find them easier and quicker to use - but it certainly made me reconsider for future!
My preference is e-ticket with a copy printed out in my bag, maybe another print out in my wallet and electronic copies on my email and maybe whatsapp

Better to be safe than sorry but that does seem a little excessive! :)
