This is a historical enquiry so I hope I am posting in the right place. Can anyone tell me when the large Great Northern goods warehouse at Luton Bute Street station was demolished. All I know is that it was still there in 1970 and it's gone now.

I have a book on it upstairs, and if nobody else posts the information before then, I shall look it up for you.

The book does not say, but it does say the majority of structures related to that sectionof track were demolished during 1971. Whether this includes this building, I'm unsure.

Despite being local, the view of any remaining structures was blocked by the ghastly bus station (which itself is now gone. I will ask around, and see if anyone knows.

The book "The Hatfield, Luton and Dunstable Railway (and on to Leighton Buzzard)", by Sue and Geoff Woodward, published by The Oakwood Press in 1994 (ISBN 0 85361 469 5) says that the GNR warehouse was demolished and that the site was being built on in 1994.

In the Past and Present book No.24 "Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and West Hertfordshire" (Published 1995, ISBN 1 85895 073 2) on page 87 there is a photo of the warehouse in 1962 and another of the building work mentioned by the Woodwards in progress in 1994.

I have "Branch line to Dunstable from Leighton Buzzard to Hatfield" by the same authors and it appears it has less information!

Was the goods shed between the bus station and the railway station? If so it was gone long before 94

asylumxl - I think the book you have was a previous version by the Woodwards; they lived in Harpenden until fairly recently and I recall your book being mentioned in the local press. The Oakwood Press book is an enlarged version.

Tim - the building was immediately adjacent to the former main trackbed which, after track lifting in February 1992, was converted into an extension to the carpark off Station Road. The Woodward's book specifically states that: "Early in 1994 the GNR warehouse was demolished .....".
