Good Morning,

Does anyone know of/have a list of all main line certified preserved diesel/electric locos?

After seeing the 2 class 40's passing through Bristol last month i'm keen to see more preserved locos doing what they were built for.

Thanks for any help,

Chris

There are quite a few. Obtaining a platform 5 Locomotive book would contain all Mainline locomotives and then you could filter out the heritage ones :)

The railway herald website has a railtours section which shows all railtours by date, what route they will take and what traction is used, which is very useful for trying to observe any such locomotives.

The NYMRs class 25 "Sybilla" is mainline passed and used on the Esk Valley tween Grosmont and Whitby. In recent years they've also use/hired in a pair of class 20s one in BR blue the other in full blown London Transport/Metropolitan maroon.

Preserved 47580 (Stratford 47 Group), D1755/47773 (Vintage Trains) and 47798 (NRM) are all mainline certified.

Correct, although only 773 sees any regular meaningful work on the mainline.

798 hasn't regularly done much since about 2012 ish when it had sanctions put on where and when it could be used after political interference from outside parties, as I know all too well when it was made unavailable the following year leaving a steam charter stuck in York most of the evening.

580 (of which I'm a shareholder) "might" see little or no further mainline use now as the wheels are on their final turn at the lathe and there isn't currently the support at the top of the group to sanction releasing a big chunk of our finances to order and purchase another set. Had we not had to carry out major generator repairs after its first major mechanical failure in preservation (and over a decade of being regarded as the most reliable member of its class left) in 2018, if I have my dates right, then I'm in little doubt it'd have moved onto new wheels by now and you'd still be seeing it as part of dual braked WCR pool as required.

As a footnote, we also have 47367 + 47596 which have to be kept going out of the same (dwindling) source of finances and with limited manpower to maintain them. All or some of our 3 47s would be put at risk longer term if the money all went into 580, although its entirely possible we won't be able to keep all 3 beyond the short to medium term if events dictated that it's no longer viable.

To be fair whilst not a big fan of a certain magazine editor at the time regarding 47798’s situation, I did think he had a point, whether it was made in the right way or through the right platform is for another discussion though.

Recall a deal being done that allowed use of 798 for a period in return for certain important work being done on it. It represented better value for both parties than each paying commercial rates to the other, so the magazine comments had in effect been biased and political given how many people at the time were well aware there were motivations to stir up trouble for one of the parties involved due it's editor's personal dislike of them. It resulted in a situation where 798 in effect then got pulled off any mainline duties that weren't for the museum's own use and meant the work that was undertaken went to waste and its lack of use would mean it would become less useful as an asset due to being a potential liability from inactivity. As per stated earlier, watching a steam hauled train get dumped at York for most of an evening because this engine (being dual braked) was the only accessible replacement other than a Deltic (which was trapped in the wrong location after closing time) was less than funny to hundreds of people. Anyway, it's all in the past now and although 798 is no doubt still in mainline ticket it barely gets any use outside of the museum now and in fact it was even sat in the great hall as an exhibit when I passed in October much as I enjoyed seeing it again for the first time in a decade.

In regard to 47580, is it so numbered on TOPS, or does the screen still so it as 47732?

For those of us who aren’t in the loop, please could someone enlighten us as to the politics surrounding 798 and what the incident was?

There’s an older thread about it here:
