Hi All,
I had my first visit to Manchester today and I evidentally got confused by the local ticketing options.

I went to the Piccadilly Metrolink stop and purchased a Daysaver (bus, train, tram) ticket which I assumed would permit to travel on the the buses, trains and trams!

In true form, the trams from Piccadilly were cancelled after I'd waited 15 minutes on the platform and this was due to a defective vehicle, so I opted instead to take the train to Manchester Oxford Road.

After some help from the Virgin trains desk they sent me over to platform 14 where I was told that the 14:16 TPE service to Edinburgh would stop at Oxford Road.

Got on the train, got off couple minutes later and tried to leave the station, and myseriously the Daysaver ticket would not work in the automated gate.

Saw a guy on the gate there and he told that the ticket ISN'T valid, however, did let me pay the £1.20 single fare from Piccadilly to Oxford Road.

I can't see why the daysaver ticket isn't valid. anyone know why it wouldn't be?

Chris

Eh? A train, tram & bus Daysaver is definitely valid on that section. I'm not surprised that it didn't work in the gate, but that doesn't mean it isn't valid.

The System One Daysaver bus, train and tram covers exactly that: bus, train and tram within the GM area. Your ticket was valid.

If it was purchased from a Metrolink ticket machine (at Piccadilly Gardens) it is printed on yellow ticket stock which won't work the barriers at Oxford Road. They can also cause confusion among rail staff due to them being non-standard tickets.

If you did possess a System One Bus, Train and Tram DaySaver, then you must compain ASAP to Northern Rail, by sending an email to [email protected] or phone on 0845 00 00 125. They need to know about these things, even if the fare was just £1.20 (still it isn't justifiable, since your ticket was valid).

Additionally, Transport for Greater Manchester control System One tickets - contact them, [email protected].

Note, however, that there are various flavours of DaySaver:
  • Bus Only (Peak) : £5.40
  • Bus Only (Off-Peak) : £4.80
  • Bus & Train : £5.80
  • Bus & Tram : £6.30
  • Train & Tram : £6.90
  • Bus, Train & Tram : £7.50

Metrolink TVMs only sell the Bus & Tram, Train & Tram and All Modes versions, and stations only sell Train & Bus (printed as Daysaver TB), Train & tram (Daysaver TM) and All Modes (Daysaver TBM) versions.

Cheers,

Barry

The Barrier staff have probably seen "to all metrolink stops" and not allowed it, you should make this known to Metrolink and Northern.

Thats very weird...
Maybe somehow some of the machines weren't updated with the new prices?
