Hey guys,

Since the routing guide hurts my head and railway staff seem unsure I'm throwing myself on your wisdom!

Do you know if a return portion of a Manchester to London ticket is valid via Warrington as a permitted route? The ticket is the same price and obviously it's just a matter of getting from Warrington Bank Quay into Manchester 10 mins away.

Yes, its permitted by maps MA+GM, with a walk between the Warrington stations

Can't you just get a train to Bank Quay?

The map only shows a route between Manchester Grp and Warrington Grp. OK it continues to Hunts Cross which implies that Warrington is Warrington Central but we've discussed a similar thing to this on another thread where the Leeds-York route on Map TP looks like you have to go via Cross Gates but apparently is also valid valid via Harrogate due to no intermediate staions being specified. The Earlstown bit maybe adds a bit of confusion here though.

I think its clear that you cannot go Warrington to Manchester via Earlestown on map GM. Unlike Harrogate, Earlestown is a Routeing Point in its own right, so would have to be shown on the line. Also, the fact there are 2 lines on map GM clearly distinguishes between the two in my mind

However, interpretations differ - Trainscanbecheaper for example thinks that it is valid via the Newton-le-Willows line

You can go from Euston to Earlestown via Warrington on map MA, however, and go from Earlestown to Manchester on map GM.

Weirdly, WebTIS doesn't like London-Manchester via Newton-le-Willows, but is fine with London-Bolton that way.

Oh yeah, I didn't see that! Was too busy concentrating on Warrington.

I missed that too! How embarrassing to make such a schoolboy error :(

I didn't think to check for a different map changeover point depending on which line between Warrington and Manchester was taken.

In the case I would agree that it is also valid to go via Earlestown
