I have got to travel from Marylebone to Old Street on the Underground next Thursday and after a quick look the TFL website advises walk to Baker Street and change at Kings Cross/St Pancras.

What is the walk like from Marylebone to Baker Street, or would anyone advise walking to Edgware Road?

We will be getting a zone 1+2 travel card so not really a cost issue, but don't want to get a bus, more of an access question, the quieter and easier access the better.

Cheers, CSK

Marylebone to Baker St is only the matter of a few minutes, 5 at most, however the change between the Circle/Met and the Northern at Kings Cross is tedious to say the least. I would go to Moorgate and go back to Old St on the Northen from there. It will also be less crowded as you are going against the flow.

Alternatively if it is raining you could go Bakerloo to Oxford St, Victoria to Euston and then Northern (City) to Old St.

Don't go to Edgeware Road there is no benefit, indeed the disbenefit is you lose the Met, which will be very noticeable in terms of service frequency. Right now by the way the Met is not stopping at Baker St travelling towards Aldgate, just to complicate matters. Its operating fine in reverse.

Thanks for that, I never really looked into Moorgate, looks far simpler than any other way. From looking on good old Google maps (and dragging the directions into the right place!) it looks easy for Marylebone to Baker Street, out the door and turn left, so that will be my plan.

Thanks for that little pointer.

Oh, while I think, what is the change like at Moorgate, I only ask as up and down stairs is no good for the missus nerve damage!

Baker Street station is 2 blocks (5 min walk) from Marylebone Mainline station. If you turn left out of the station you will see it in the distance ahead of you along Melcombe Place.

With regards to access... There are no lifts at Baker Street (stairs only) to get onto Platform 5 for trains to Kingscross. At Kingscross it's quite a long interchange from the Circle/Hammersmith Lines to the Northern Line. There are newly installed lifts from the circle/hammersmith platforms to ticket hall level... There are no lifts to the Northern Line according to the current tube map (but I think the new escalators on the northern ticket hall may take you directly to the platform).

With regards to bus there is the 205 in the direction of Bow Church that goes directly passed Old Street. You can get this bus from Marylebone Road bus stop W. Walk out of station, go straight to main road (Marylebone Road) and turn left, walk 100m to bus stop.

See the following link for the bus stop location.

Mooregate sounds like a much better idea than Kingscross. It is much quieter than Kingscross and the distances between lines are much shorter.

The arrival platform (eastbound circle) is at ticket hall level and there are escalators down to the Northern Line platforms... I can't remember if they are straight onto the platform or not.

If the weather is nice, you can get to Old Street from Moorgate on foot pretty quick - and it's a very straight forward walk. Otherwise just about every bus going north will pass Old Street. It's not 5 minutes on foot, but probably less than 10 depending on how fast you walk.

If you were going south of Old Street along City Road, you may be better off walking up from Moorgate anyway. If you do opt to take the tube and for any reason the Northern Line has major delays, you could also use FCC (follow signs for trains to Stevenage) if you don't go up to street level. They run around every 12-15 minutes or so, as every one will stop at Old Street regardless of its ultimate destination.

There is a step-free way from eastbound Circle Line to northbound Northern Line at Moorgate. On leaving the eastbound Circle Line, walk to the front of the train and approach, but do not pass through, the ticket barriers. Turn left and approach, but do not go down, the escalators marked to the Northern Line. Don't take these escalators because they have a couple of flights of steps at the bottom. Just before the top of these escalators, turn right into a corridor behind the ticket office. At the other end of the corridor is a set of escalators to the First Capital Connect platforms 9 and 10. Go down this escalator and walk along either of 9 or 10. Half-way along the platform there is a central gap leading to another set of escalators from 9 and 10 down to the Northern Line. Take this. See this station plan.

Just what I'm looking for, superb, no doubt I'll have to print this out to remember it though! Plus I will get to see some First Capital Connect services I never see!

Bus route 205 is good for being direct along a basically straight road. The other way by Underground is to change at Elephant & Castle, although it is quite a long walk between the lines there.
