Max journey times and boundary stations

If a station straddles two zones, which one is counted for the purposes of maximum journey times?

eg East Croydon to Notting Hill Gate travelling on a weekday lunchtime is either:

- Across 4 zones, 100 minutes, or
- Across 5 zones, 110 minutes

Interesting question, I might have to try that out. My educated guess is that it would be 4 zones as you don't actually enter zone 2 on the Central line until the train leaves Notting Hill Gate. If using the Circle or District lines you don't enter zone 2 at all at that station.

I guess this means travelling via central London from zone 5 East Croydon to zone 1 or 2 Notting Hill Gate which I think counts as across 5 or 6 zones respectively for purposes of the journey times.

In fact I was thinking of travelling via Shepherds Bush and not touching zone 1 other than at Notting Hill Gate, hence 4 or 5 zones.

Yes, you're right, that would be 5 zones. Not sure what happened to my brain earlier.

And yes, that would be 4 zones as you would indeed avoid zone 1.

Sorry for the earlier confusion.

That would make sense but are journeys charged purely based on number of zones?

Here are the fares for this journey.

Well that would be my guess, yes, but in the back of my mind is an unusual scenario which suggested that dual zoned stations might be allowed time to the opposite side of the zoning. This was a few years ago, hence why I might test it out at some point in the summer.
