In Merseyrail adverts it says that one can buy a saveaway from "any PayPoint store" (exact wording).

Is it really possible to buy a saveaway this way outside the Liverpool City Region?

Asking for a friend.

If you need to get a MetroCard I doubt it as stores outside Liverpool won't have any.

If you already have one I suspect it's possible if done via the PayPoint machine but you'd probably have to tell them how to find it on there.

If the metrocard flow is the same as it used to be for Arriva smart tickets they should just be able to have you place the smartcard on the reader (leaving it there), and it’ll come up with the relevant options. Whether this is true in practice is anyone’s guess, those pay point machines are temperamental at best.

Just be VERY clear what ticket you want and know the exact price that you should be being charged. The owner of my local corner shop in Merseyside was insisting that what I needed was a Solo ticket (bus only) even though I was asking for a Saveaway (which he had probably never come across before).

I will post them a metrocard. They do not live in the Liverpool City Region.

If anyone actually knows the answer, I'd be obliged.

Merseytravel says
Where can I buy it?
PayPoint stores in Merseyside, Merseytravel Centres and staffed stations in Merseyside.
I can't see anywhere on the Merseyrail web page
which indicates that they can be purchased at PayPoint outlets. So I would rely on the Merseytravel statement "PayPoint stores in Merseyside". I think that the rationale for offering them at PayPoint outlets is to enable customers whose first journey is by bus to purchase them.

It has also been reported that it is possible to buy the ticket at staffed railway stations outside Merseyside, and without using a MetroCard.
When we had a Forum Merseyside challenge day several members coming from far afield purchased the ticket at their point of origin (e.g. Glasgow) and then had no problem using it on buses and train when they got here.

It is yes, replacing the scratch card type which were stocked at newsagents since day one.
And at local Post Offices and public libraries. All very convenient, at least before many of them were closed down.

I have heard people say on here that there was a lot of fraud going on with the old scratch-cards and that is why they were withdrawn e.g. only scratching off when you see a ticket inspector, or cutting out dates and sticking them on other cards. Similar scratch-off West Yorkshire Day Saver tickets are still available - are these similarly abused? I can’t say that I have ever seen anyone, other than myself, using one so it can’t be that widespread.

I received an email from Merseytravel the other week, advising me that paper Saveaways had been abolished and that they were now only available on Walrus or Metrocards.

However, yesterday I presented the clerk at Huyton with my Walrus card but he said he need to issue a paper one. So, in theory you can purchase one at any National Rail station with a ticket office. (I tried to buy one at Newton-le-Willows around 7.15am but the ticket office was still closed).

I promise you that I am not making this up. It's just there was a spelling mistake on the ticket. It was described as a Mersyetravel Saveaway. ;)

Yes that’s my understanding of how it works, there’s a standard range of ITSO products available to all Paypoint terminals and accessed by the type of smart card presented, and I know someone who successfully purchased a Saveaway on one near Llandudno a couple of years ago.

ITSO Metro/Walrus card Saveaways are only loadable at Merseyrail ticket offices, Merseytravel Centers and PayPoint retailers.

However Saveaways can still be issued on paper outside of Merseyside. For example i regularly sell "Bog roll" issue Saveaways onboard from our Star mobile machines and booking offices outside the Merseyrail network can issue them on the old magnetic card tickets.

Some bus drivers can be picky about the non ITSO ones though!

On a side note, I've figured out how to sell Merseyrail Only Day savers on my bog roll machine. I might sell myself one just to see how the rent-a-thug revenue on Merseyrail take to it!

That would be fun to watch, see the look of confusion on their faces.

Merseyrail Daysavers are normally issued on Credit Card Size Tickets (CCSTs), so why not on bog roll? (Also available on Merseyrail's bespoke online purchasing site, but why would you?). Merseytravel Saveaways, we have discovered, are available as paper CCSTs from all staffed railway stations except Merseyrail ones, which will only issue onto a Walrus or Metrocard, on bog roll format from places that sell using that format, and seemingly onto MetroCard at any PayPoint, even as far away as Llandudno!

Because none of their gatelines have barcode readers, which is allegedly the reason they won't do e-tickets, though I personally think it's protectionism of the income of their largely pointless booking offices.
