I saw a rumor the other day that Microsoft had ended production of the Xbox One all digital and X, along with removing the 6 & 12 month gold subscriptions. The former turned out to just be a glitch with Amazon, however yesterday, I checked the store and sure enough, you can now only purchase 1 & 3 month subscriptions. Is this evidence that online is to become free and the perks you currently get with gold will be merged with the game pass?

Article relating to the removal: https://metro.co.uk/2020/07/16/xbox...line-free-next-gen-console-xbox-one-12998665/
Microsoft’s next gen preparations are getting into high gear as they discontinue the Xbox One X and Xbox Live Gold subs. The Xbox One has not gone well for Microsoft but it’s not as if it’s been an unmitigated disaster. It’s still sold around 48 million units worldwide, which is well ahead of much more beloved consoles such as the N64 and Mega Drive. But with everything pointing towards Microsoft having at least two models of next gen Xbox that means they’ve suddenly got more consoles than they know what to do with. So while it may seem a little premature, it does make sense that retailers such as Amazon and Best Buy have begun discontinuing the Xbox One. What now also seems to be happening is that Microsoft has discontinued 12-month subscriptions to Xbox Live Gold, implying that within a year it won’t be around in its current form.

There are a few reasons why the 12-month subscription could’ve been discontinued, the most boring (and therefore most likely) being some sort of error on Microsoft’s website, although it’s been removed from the site for every territory – so it’s not some minor glitch. The more interesting options are that Xbox Live Gold is being retired in its current form and reimagined as a new service, possibly by combing it with Xbox Game Pass. It’s even possible that Microsoft could be removing the need to pay for online play at all, something which PC gamers do not have to do and which console fans have become increasingly resentful of in recent years.

We’ll have to wait for official word on exactly what’s going on, although Microsoft has already tried to downplay what’s happening with the consoles. Xbox console business planning lead Dan Tavares initially blamed the discontinued notices on Amazon and claimed that they’d merely changed the SKU numbers for the consoles, although you’ll notice his comment only covers the Xbox One S. But now even Microsoft’s own online store lists the Xbox One X as sold out, and the same thing is reported to be happening at US retailer Target and in multiple Australian stores. It certainly seems as if Microsoft is trying to clear the decks for the launch of Xbox Series X, although it’s unclear exactly how much they will reveal of their hardware plans at the Xbox Games Showcase next week – with insiders already claiming that the new consoles’ prices will not be announced.
Evidence of the removal of gold (from me)

I hope so!

PC gamers don't have to pay to play online, I deeply resent that I have to with my console. Especially as so much online play is like the Wild West, trying to play Forza Horizon online is just a joke. ****housing and trolling is bad enough without paying a fiver a month for the privilege.

So I don't.

Microsoft has now confirmed the removal of 12 month gold subscriptions as well as the discontinuation of the Xbox One all digital & X variants
Microsoft has reportedly removed the option to purchase 12-month subscriptions of Xbox Live Gold across all territories in which the year-long subscription was sold.

While the single month and three-month subscriptions remain, there is now no longer an option to save by purchasing the 12-month sub, leading to speculation that the service will either be retired or refreshed for its next-gen system, Xbox Series X, which is out later this year.

It's particularly curious timing given we recently learned Xbox game streaming service xCloud will be folded into Xbox Game Pass this September "at no additional cost to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members". 100 games will be available for streaming via a smartphone or tablet and more than 50 are currently in xCloud's preview program, including Halo 5, Destiny 2, Dragon Age Inquisition.

Microsoft did not announce the change nor expand on why it had taken the decision to delist the 12-month option when pressed for clarification, but it did confirm that the subscription's removal was not accidental.

"At this time, Xbox has decided to remove the 12 months Xbox Live Gold SKU from the Microsoft online Store," a Microsoft spokesperson told TA. "Customers can still sign up for a one month or three month Xbox Live Gold subscription online through the Microsoft Store."

Microsoft also recently confirmed that while the Xbox One S is still being manufactured and sold, its Xbox One X and Xbox One S All-Digital Editions have now been officially discontinued.

Word that Microsoft's current-gen console was no longer in production began to circulate on message boards last week, and these initially unsubstantiated reports gained increasing credibility as a number of retailers, including Amazon and Target in the US began to list various Xbox One models as discontinued on their websites.

I think this is more a push to get people to have Game Pass than them looking to make multiplayer free. But we shall see!

Don't know why they don't just get rid of games with gold if that was the case. I don't see them only having the 2 most expensive subscriptions as that would be PS3 launch levels of collective sighs & jeers.

My feels are that they will still keep Xbox Live Gold (along with Games with Gold as I can certainly see removing that winding people up too much) but push people towards Game Pass. Game Pass ultimate already includes Gold, so I can certainly see them pushing Game Pass more. In the US you can get Game Pass Ultimate for 12 months for $120 - which is the same as 12 monthly Xbox Live Gold renewals.
