Hi,

I’m in the same situation as so many others in that I’ve applied for my fair share of network rail operative job vacancies in the hope of getting a foot in the door.
I have my own reasons for wanting a job there but just wondered about what’s motivating others to apply and also some real life opinions of some current operatives. Is it really as good as we think it is?

Thanks

Operatives are probably one one of the most commenly applied for positions. The OLE and S&T operatives can have in excess of 150+ applicants each per post

I'm applying for operative roles for NWR as it's a good career move with genuine possibilities of progression. I'm a skilled welder by trade and the last 6 firms I have worked for have gone under so job security is a big factor

Without sounding patronising, are you aware network rail have welders? If you do then sound but if not keep your eyes open for operative jobs coming under under welding and grinding mate

I was aware of it mate and it's certainly not patronising. I always thought it was thermite welding they done and it's very hard to find a NWR vacancy for that role as I think most of it is sub contracted out. The course for that procedure is very expensive and not taught in many colleges. I dont know If any other welding techniques are used on the railway though

Almost all welding on NR maintencance is in house though renewals use contractors. Flash butt welding on is used to join rails as well as thermite. Also MIG to build up and repair crossings on pointwork. All welding techniques are taught in house.
