Hi all, first time poster so please be gentle.

I have recently started to commute from Newbury to London regularly on a Monday, and I have so far been using TrainSplit very successfully However they have told me that the advance tickets I was using are available for the foreseeable future, and actually pointed to a recent post on this forum about GWR advance ticket prices.

For context I was getting 7.53 from Newbury then changing at Reading for a direct train to Paddington, costing around £25, which was very happy with.

I need to ultimately get to Liverpool Street Station before 9.50 on Monday, I’ll return in the evening of the same day, and realistically I can’t leave the office before 6pm so will need to depart Paddington 18.30 onwards.

Journey time - I was changing at Reading, which took up to 1hr 10 which I’m ok with - the shorter/more direct the better, obviously.

It’s not always a certainty I’ll need to go in on a Monday, so the later I can book tickets the better, which I appreciate won’t help in getting the best deals on advances.

I’ve had a look around and - on next Monday for example - the best I can get on TrainSplit is about £45 with changes, while direct on GWR it looks like £49 will get me there direct.

So my question is - are there any journeys or ticket providers or ways that anyone can recommend to help me get the cost back down? Also does this advance ticketing tend to be this unpredictable?

Thanks

Yes, there is no obligation to provide advance fares, particularly at times when there is peak demand. They may be used to encourage demand when there is capacity, then withdrawn when the market is deemed to support a higher level of fares.

Do you qualify for any railcards?
