A friend has asked me to investigate ticket prices for a single journey from Newcastle to London, then on to Paris on the Eurostar.

Date of travel : Tuesday 22nd July 2025

Passengers : 1 adult, 1 child aged 9

I know it's very early, but my friend is the type of person who likes to book as early as possible.

How is the best way to book .. is it simply a case of looking on the Eurostar website and getting prices, then later on when NCL-KGX tickets are available, buy these too.

I did suggest a plane might be better, but a fear of flying has squashed that idea

thanks !

You can book up to mid-May at the moment, Eurostar do open sales quite early in general.

Your friend may wish to look at CIV tickets, from Newcastle to London International CIV (Station code: LNE) and vice-versa for protected connection between National Rail and Eurostar services, you can get Advance Single options with these as well as full fare Anytime Singles.

The forum's ticketing site should sell these fares if desired.

Thank you .. I had never heard of CIV tickets before.

I actually looked on the forum's ticket section for prices, NCL-KGX, then NCL-LNE. The price is the same, with the added extra .. walk to Euston from Kings Cross.

I also had a quick look online and one website says the ticket can only be bought at a ticket office and you have to show your Eurostar ticket first.

I quote from The Guardian .. You can only buy these tickets in person at a staffed station (not online) and you need to show your Eurostar booking to qualify.

This wouldn't be a problem, if ticket offices can also sell advance tickets, just like, for example the LNER website. I'm pretty certain Newcastle is an LNER controlled station.

thanks

If they are planning any further rail travel outside UK, then it's worth checking Interrail.

A 4-day pass for 1A 1C plus Eurostar supplements is £295 (365 in 1st - and there's a 25% off sale on now...) so they shouldn't pay more than that even for one way.

Alternatively a Family and Friends Railcard will pay for itself on the trip to London alone.

You can get a reasonable take on prices by looking ahead on websites including our own.

You can definitely buy them from the forum's site and i believe Avanti West Coast's website. No idea on other TOCs, but yes a ticket office should be able to sell them.

Eurostar tickets are usually £5 or £10 more expensive if you book as soon as they open, rather than around 4 months out. However they can of course just go up rather than going down, so your friend has to make that choice.

That is very true, but the same applies with airlines, hotels, LNER Advance Singles (as came up in another thread recently) and really anything that works on a dynamic pricing type of system.

This isn't correct. As has been stated, you can buy them from Trainsplit.

The information from the guardian is outdated, these CIV tickets used to be available at ticket offices only, but they are now available at trainsplit, the forum's ticket website, and possibly other retailers

a ticket office should be able to sell them.
“Should” is the important word. In practice, you may be the first person ever to ask for one. If you do decide to go to a ticket office (which I don’t recommend), take printouts from websites (e.g. brfares.com) that you can show them.

I would think a key bit of advice is to work out which of the 2 legs at the time of day is the cheapest to decide what to book first ie London to Paris or Newcastle to London.

If the op has never seen it before it is well worth having a read of ‘the man in seat 61’ superb website on booking rail travel to Paris (and numerous other destinations).
