I am thinking of buying a day pass via the reach plc newspaper offer.

the t&c say;
travel anywhere on the Northern network using Northern services
but if i want to go liverpool - york or preston - york
it defaults to tpe

how do I search for northern services only
all search engines seem to do this.

If I get on a tpe service is it a valid ticket or will I be fined

Use a journey planner like FastJP.com. In Routeing Options select 'Only Use Selected Operators' and then make sure that only Northern is ticked.

The NRE journey planner allows you to select operator (though it doesn't work well IME).
Selecting "via Burnley" should also work for a journey that way.

The NRE one looks for journeys which include at least one leg on (in this case) Northern. That could help if you were looking for a "Northern & Connections" ticket (if there was such a thing), but it's not so good for "Northern only" ones.

Never heard about this scheme .. might investigate. £10 for a day's travel (plus the cost of two newspapers)

Trouble is, being based near Newcastle I don't have any loop I can go on .. t would have to be Carlisle - Settle - Leeds and back again

Anyway .. that'll give me a task .. investigate other possible routes

Thanks Negone from Liverpool

Yes, I could do that ... I had never been on a NR train until a few weeks ago

I got some cheap Northern Rail tickets in the sale ..

Day trips to Seaham, Hartlepool, Hexham and Prudhoe/Wylam (4 at £3)

and Carlisle return for £6, from Newcastle

.. so by the beginning of April I'll have had 5 trips away for £18 .. not bad at all !!!

My advice is to get an Advance from Newcastle to York and then do Northern back round from there.

You could do it in reverse, but I find it easier to get the Advance bit out of the way at the start of the day, giving total flexibility from then onwards.

Back in 2019 when I got a complimentary voucher for a train departing early , I received an email from Northern advising me to use www.fastjp.com:

Please access the following link to download an up to date map of all Northern routes: https://www.northernrailway.co.uk/travel/network-map

By utilising a really good planning website called Fast Journey Planner (http://www.fastjp.com/#new?) you can plan a journey to and from anywhere, and more importantly you can select to either use only or exclude certain rail operators, so if you enter your preferred journey, click on 'Transport Operators', select 'Only use Selected Operators' from the menu and then select 'Northern', when you then hit the 'Search for Trains' button it will only find journeys that include Northern trains, and no other, making it easier to plan a trip and make the most out of your vouchers. This will only plot a single journey, to don't forget to plan your return as well.

Fastjp.com is the journey planner behind the forum's ticketing website.

Many thanks for your reply.

Yes, I noticed that website in an earlier comment and had a quick look ... very good indeed

Will need to investigate further
