I've just recieved this email from TransPennine Customer Relations. Before I make my response, I'd be very very grateful if someone could help me understand what it is they are referring to here:

With regards to the difference in the amount, please be aware that season tickets are designed to offer better value travel over longer periods. So the cost of a season ticket valid for 1 month, for example, will have a higher cost per day than a ticket valid for 3 months. Therefore, the value of the refund due on your original ticket for the unused 1 month and 14 days will be lower than the cost of a season ticket valid only for this time, as the cost per day is lower on your ticket.

This issue of a refunded odd-period season ticket (in place of a changeover that they agreed I was entitled to make but they said it was technically impossible for this to happen) has been ongoing for months now, and I'm tying myself in knots over it. They also said that one of the reasons for their error in calculations was "it would appear that an extra half days use was added when processing your refund, as an incorrect ‘last date used’ was selected." Uh?

Apologies if these are foolish questions because I have missed something basic. I have consulted the guide but am still confused, thanks to all in advance.

That looks rubbish frankly. The daily cost of any season valid for between 1 month and 10 months xx days is the same*. As long as you have used more than a month then the refund should be pro-rata less the admin fee.

* There might be small variations depending on how many 31 day months are involved. I think xx is 12, but don't quote me.

I have just been on the phone to someone at Customer Relations (who even put me on hold to go and check this) who is insisting that the statement I've quoted in the box is 'technically correct'.

Well I don't see how it can be.

A monthly ticket is 3.84 times a weekly.
Each additional month is the same.
Each additional 5 days is 0.64 times a weekly.
Each additional day is 0.13 times a weekly.

And it is 10 months 12 days (38.4+1.28+0.26=39.94). Another day takes it over the 40 times weekly cost of an annual.

They have agreed to call me back. I believe you more than I believe them at this point!

It's possible they're confusing a normal refund (which is calculated as stated in Mike's post) with a "Void" day refund (as TPE are still on the old Passenger's Charter scheme), where the weekly cost is divided by 5, the monthly by 22 and the Annual by 260 to calculate the amount due.

Odd periods in such cases are counted as 22 days for each month, 5 for each whole week, and any "odd" days.
