No not an April Fool although given the date of this article over at the DM I thought it was, but alas no this really is true (apparently), even the Jewish press (and here) have reported on it.

I'm kind of at a loss for words, dumbfounded and confused by this one perhaps someone could enlighten us? :-? ;)

Orthodox Jewish man photographed covering himself in plastic bag during flight because faith forbids him to fly over cemeteries

  • An Orthodox Jewish plane passenger was seen wrapped in a plastic bag during a flight
  • It was believed the man is a Kohein, a religious descendant of the priests of ancient Israel, who are banned from flying over cemeteries
  • Fellow passengers strained to see the unusual sight and took pictures

It is not unusual for people to have rituals when flying on a plane, like wearing a St Christopher chain or keeping their eyes closed until they take off.

But one passenger took his beliefs a step further by covering himself in a plastic bag for the whole of his journey because his religion forbids him to fly over cemeteries.

This was the bizarre sight that greeted plane passengers when an Orthodox Jewish man covered himself under a plastic sheet.

It was believed the man is a Kohein, a religious descendant of the priests of ancient Israel, who are banned from flying over cemeteries.

Many wrap themselves in plastic bags as a compromise measure.

The startling photograph, which has now gone viral after being posted on Reddit, shows fellow passengers straining over their seats to get a look.

Beneath his plastic wrapping, the man is dressed entirely in black, and appears to be wearing a Jewish skullcap or 'kippah'.

As a controversial solution - not entirely allowed by those in the Jewish Orthodox - the plastic bag creates a kind of barrier between the Kohein and the surrounding tumah, or impurity.

Rabbi Jeffrey W. Goldwasser, of Temple Beit HaYam in Israel, explained: 'In orthodox and Conservative communities, Kohanim are expected to abstain from coming in contact with the dead, which includes a prohibition on visiting cemeteries except for the funerals of close relatives.'

Even if they can be secured by a seat belt, the passengers wouldn't be able to reach an oxygen mask or quickly escape the plane in the event of an emergency.

There is also the question of how they can breathe.

Pre-punched holes in the plastic are said to invalidate the barrier, according to Jewish newspaper YatedNe'eman.

I think he's being harsh on himself, considering himself to potentially be in contact with the cemetary several hundred feet up !

Still, if he doesn't complain about me having my whisky and cokes when I'm next to him on the plane, he's welcome to sit next to me :D

...but the metal body of the fuselage isn't a barrier?

Exactly how many corpses would you come into contact with at 30,000 feet?
He would be shafted if the aircraft had a coffin in the hold.
I assume that he is taking this teaching from the Torah which I'm sure was written before aeroplanes were invented. So where does the flying thing come from?
If it's the guys religion and he wants to take it seriously then fair play to the guy, but on the flip side I can see how it would look odd to those that have never encountered it before.
I do have to raise the question of how he intends to breathe though. Is the bag sealed?
and there must be safety issues like the article says.

So the Daily Mail has basically stolen a picture off Reddit and built an article around it? :p

Surely in ancient times when the Jewish belief and faith structure was being worked out, it was not known that man could possibly fly. This ban on flying over cemetaries must be a 20th Century "addition" to the Jewish faith

They also have a habit of ripping entire photogalleries from sites such as Buzzfeed, so it's not surprising.

And Hotlinking too, a while ago there was a image showing a foul mouthed rant about how the Daily Mail had just got the image maker an excess bandwidth fee by directly linking to the image on his webspace (it's rude to hotlink if you have a high traffic site, host the image on your server with a link/credit)

Oh and then there was the time they hotlinked B3TA and the image was swapped for Goatse*'s hello.jpg

*Note to mods, link is to Wikipedia not Goatse....

I'm sure that's more than 1 litre in that bag... ;)

No disrespect to the person concerned or the Jewish faith but i think i would be a little unnerved at this, and would share concerns about the individuals wellbeing.

If there was a video of this, I'd be waiting to hear the Harlem Shake music playing...

Poor bloke that had to sit next to him....

The bloke sitting next to him looks to be in Jewish traditional fancy dress, so was probably either travelling with him . Or would already know what and why he was doing.

Personally I'd want him by the window or out of the bag, I'd certainly be asking for him or me to be moved if sat next to him. He'd certainly cause issues during any evacuation (reading about the Lion Air ditching at the moment)

Just read about that myself. The aircraft involved is less than 2 months old.
From reading the articles on the subject, they seem to describe a stall on final approach, maybe pilot error, but an aircraft failure can't be ruled out.
No doubt Air Crash Investigation (Mayday) will pick it up for the next series.

I must say that it's rather horrible that I hear of a plane accident and look forward to Second to Disaster/Air Crash Investigation to do a show on it.

But, hey, I am the nut who watched a whole series of ACI on a plane to Australia, while my wife was gobsmacked that I'd ever consider watching such material while flying!

You mean you don't watch Airplane! when flying?

I've seen both of those films enough times that I don't need to watch them again, but hey, I probably would! These are films, along with others like Top Secret, that you can watch over and over again and always chuckle at.

But, we're wandering way off topic now!

You'd be amazed about how many stories you can write from social media. I'm sure there's a couple of thousand words of potential copy from some of the threads on here alone!

There was a story once that someone was reading Debt of Honor on a flight once, and was told to put it away 'because reading a book with a cover picture of a crash on an aeroplane is unlucky'. From that point on, I've decided never to take Red for Danger on a train, just in case.

But the business of a plastic bag does seem to me to be carrying things too far somehow.

Does that involve a massive disaster with many people killed? I'm probably the only person in the country who's never read Harry Potter.

The story probably came from an old tale about the Titanic and its similarily with a story called Futility, or the Wreck of the Titan, which was published in 1898, and apparently still quite popular in 1912.
