Hi Forum, I was caught using my sister's 13+ oyster, the Tfl people took my details, but had me pay a penalty fare on the spot - will they prosecute further.

Are you sure it was a penalty fare you paid? Can you upload the pf with the details (name , reference number etc) obscure?

Once a PF is paid that is usually the end of the matter.

Yes it was a pf, they gave me a white ticket/receipt which let me get off at the station I was heading for + 50gbp as I paid early

So they won't send a letter or hunt me down for prosecution, I was reading the other forums and saw how they'd hunt u down for misusing valued cards

They don’t tend to prosecute people under 18.
I saw on the policy thing by hadders misusing would lead to prosecution of undr 18, but they won't proceed as I paid the penalty

No, if you've been issued and have paid a Penalty Fare that is the end of the matter. You have been treated leniently because of your age, I suspect.

This, basically. If you do at as an adult it’s a report for prosecution and a likely conviction at the magistrates’ court.

There's a one letter change that will make this accurate;

I saw on the policy thing by hadders misusing could lead to prosecution of undr 18

'Could' and 'would' have related meanings - but they are still different. In practice, what it means here is that the railway are reluctant to prosecute people under 18, so don't normally do so - but if an under 18 takes this as an opportunity to frequently travel without a valid ticket, the railway has got the right to go to court.

So no one, whatever their age, should think that they don't need a ticket. When the railway catches up with them, there's still a risk of ending up in court.

Also will I get a letter to house, I don't think you do if you pay on the spot

No, not chasing you for more money or follow up.

But if it was your sisters pass and it was confiscated, and she is at same address, then she will presumably have to reapply and her parents (who are obviously your parents too) might get to see a replacement pass and reminder of the rules. Rather depends on reason given for pass needing replacement.

So beside getting the new card, can I assume the issue if fully over

Yes that will be it. However - if you were to be stopped again in future and found to be fare evading again, the previous penalty fare will remain on file and you're unlikely to be as lucky next time. Basically, ensure you pay the correct fare going forward and you'll have no issues!

Thank you so much, I was scared they'd investigate further, but I paid On the spot so I'm clear. Won't do it again.

Many under 18s would not regard having to pay a £50 penalty on TfL as at all "lenient"! That's equivalent to quite a lot of fares avoided in London.

It’s lenient compared to further investigation and potential criminal proceedings.
