Being honest, who has broken the law by downloading or obtaining copyrighted material illegal, whether it is the odd song, e-book or films.

I have to say that I do dabble myself.

Me too, the occasional tune anyway, though the android apps that let me do this maintain it isn't illegal. I don't know for sure though.

Wouldn't bother, shop bought is of a better quality.

I disagree. Piracy can often EXCEED shop bought products. Full BR rips (usually from TPB) are full 1080p.

Besides, something like Windows XP is the same online or in the shop!

In the days of high speed broadband, that is completely untrue.

Not that I condone any type of piracy, it has personally cost me an absolute fortune.

Well yeah, there is a market for any type of media that people would like to avoid paying for.

All you have to do is go to any form of carboot or market to see them.

Piracy issue ranges a lot really. I do use torrents but for legal items. Such as a massive mod pack on IL2 Sturmovik.

Also for you Darren i understand how it has for you to be honest, sadly a lot who will pirate never will buy the product.

A lot of 'Mega' Games companies frequently use the pirating excuse to introduce extreme methods of DRM (For example Ubi-Soft)

Never for films or any media except music. I burn music between discs but that's been legalized (or is being legalized) anyway. So technically, that doesn't count as downloading from Pirate websites.....and I don't distribute anything I burn either.

I have broadband, and definitely not high speed. Definitely wouldn't cope with a whole film.

But I wasn't replying to you with interest of how fast your broadband is. You stated that pirated material was of a lesser quality than bought, completely wrong.

Out of interest though, no broadband should be unable to cope with a film, given the download size would be most likely less than a purchased game for instance. Who is your ISP?

What about TV shows in the US that aren't available here in the UK? Downloading them will nearly always be illegal, but how else are you supposed to watch?

Put simply, don't.

All piracy hurts someone. I am guilty of it in the past, but I don't do it anymore.

Have to say that when it comes to US TV shows I do download them quite alot. Games I don't bother with as there is too much of a security issue and alot of the time I find they end up being bogus. DVD and Blu Ray I generally stick to legal copies.

If the film and TV companies didn't have such a long wait between a theatrical release and home release and a difference in release dates between the US and the UK (including for TV) I bet piracy would fall.

Use a VPN programe/ server it will allow you to watch TV outside your country as it makes you IP address one of that country. Also they are fully legal as well.

For TV i just wait till appear in this country really.

Just to add about games. If certain companies do concentrate on not going into the belief that 'PC users' all pirate and concentrate on their games more so then direct ports piracy may go down. Also things such as Ubi-online which require you to have a perment online internet connection even if just playing Single player. If your connection drops or their servers are down you can't play the game. That anti-piracy method will increase illegal downloads.

About films & TV i agree with GB

I always think that if everyone did it then it probably wouldn't exist at all.

I have downloaded a few music tracks from limewire over the past few years but I'm more of a film buff and I will ALWAYS purchase an original DVD of a film if I want a copy of a good film. You really can't complain at a 10 pounds outlay for a pristine copy of a film, can you?

I admit I have dabbled with P2P a bit but I pay for everything now (although I have taken full advantage of student discounts/MSDNAA privileges for software). Morals tend to kick in after a while

I generally disapprove of pirating. But there is one US TV programme I torrent, The Amazing Race, but only because that is the only way to watch it in the UK. They did show a few series of it on one of the satellite channels years ago, but now it's nowhere to be found!

I disagree. Piracy can often EXCEED shop bought products. Full BR rips (usually from TPB) are full 1080p.
How does that exceed shop bought products?

A dual-layer BD holds 50GB, that would take some time to download, even on a relatively fast BB connection.

It exceeds because you can get uncut versions, special editions etc which can't be obtained in shops. Also available in a file format which is compatible with a very wide range of devices. No expensive bluray players needed.

With 50Meg fibre being extended across the cable network, piracy can only get stronger.

If there any 1080p special versions of a film floating about than they probably came from a BD release. Of course not all BDs are available in all countries, however a lot of BDs are region free.

You can get BD players for less that £70 these days (http://www.amazon.co.uk/LG-Electron...Q38E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1315087118&sr=8-1) so hardly expensive.

No, it's too much hassle trying to find what you want.

I do frequently use bittorrent to download legal material. Most often this is free software

Like quite a few others I use it to get films or old programs that aren't on DVD in the UK (or anywhere), or TV series that aren't shown in the UK. I don't see why that hurts anyone as I am unable to buy the product and I would buy the product if it became available.

I have a few times sampled things too, if someone says something is good I'll sometimes download it and then if I like buy it, if not delete. To some extent that's boosting sales as I might end up buying the series wheras if I hadn't watched a torrent then I wouldn't have. Same goes for some software, and I have to admit some things I'm glad I didn't buy as they were poor or full of bugs and I'd probably have wanted by money back anyway. Again though if it's good enough I'll buy it, if not I'll delete.

Normally stick to the £3 DVDs from Morrisons these days, although the selection seems to be the same thing every time I'm there.

Most of the music on my iPod has been the same for about a year now. Most of the modern music is crap.
