Any idea to what this is? Says on the website there's planned engineering. Is this related to the two beginning of the day trains cancelled due to weather?

I can't find that on Merseyrail website? That appears to be referring to today (Sunday 14th).

But there is this which is related: https://www.merseyrail.org/journey-...ter-and-ellesmere-port-lines-15-january-2024/

Route proving trains will be run at the start of service tomorrow, to ensure that the line is clear of ice and safe for passenger service.

To accommodate this, there have been a number of cancellations and alterations to Chester and Ellesmere Port line services as follows:

The 05:56 Chester to Liverpool Central will start at Hooton at 06:10

The 05:39 Liverpool Central to Chester will terminate at Hooton

The 06:00 Liverpool Central to Ellesmere Port will terminate at Hooton

The 06:10 Liverpool Central to Chester will terminate at Hooton at 06:36

The 06:17 Ellesmere Port to Liverpool Central will start at Hooton at 06:26

The 06:47 Ellesmere Port to Liverpool Central will start at Hooton at 06:56

We apologise for the disruption this will cause our customers.

The line closure 14/01 was due to booked engineering works, and have been advertised for a while. There have been rail replacement buses all day.

The cancellations 15/01 are because of expected overnight weather conditions, and so that in the morning they can run 'route proving' trains (basically empty trains that will make sure theres no ice build up and trains are actually able to run - better to do this empty than with passengers on board!).

Edited for clarity of dates

That does seem to be related to Sunday's works.

thank you for this, my mistake not noticing the planned engineer works. you can never know with how unreliable merseyrail have been lately!
