I was wondering how many drivers GWR would allocate between say Penzance and Paddington? Like a Penzance driver would drive to where, and then the next driver would drive to where? How many different drivers would there be, and where would they drive to? Obviously you can't be exact, as scheduling differs, but roughly who drives where?

Regarding High Speed Services, PZ trained up to EX. LA trained to both PZ and Pad as are EX but don't know rosters. EX were trained to Bristol too but don't know if this is still the case. Sleeper is EX drivers except ecs to/from depots.

Guessing some EX must sign to Bristol for the couple of trains that go to via Bristol everyday?

Both Plymouth and Exeter sign London via bristol as well as the b and h route.
Penzance only go as far as Exeter.

Generally services starting at Plymouth bound for Paddington will often be worked throughout by a Plymouth man whilet services starting at Penzance will often be worked by a PZ man to Exeter where an Exeter man will take over but this is not exclusively the case.

Paddington drivers also sign Exeter to Paddington but not as far as Plymouth.

Sleepers are driven on the down by an Exeter man to Exeter then a Plymouth man takes over to Plymouth then another Plymouth man takes over from Plymouth down to penzance. On the up its all Exeter men.

EX sign PZ-pad via all possible ways, to be able to run the sleeper on the Up.

Is "LA" Laria (i.e. Plymouth) in this context?

Bristol HSS drivers also sign the road from Paddington to Exeter by all ways with the exception of Castle Cary to Exeter via Yeovil.

Isn’t there some problem with Plymouth crews not knowing the Hullavington road? So if a Plymouth-Padd service is diverting via Bristol it must be routed via Box if there’s a chance it might be worked by a Plymouth man, despite the Hully route being quicker and easier to path through Temple Meads (although Filton bank can be tricky.)

Yes this is correct I still remember bristol panel trying to send me round hullavington one day when I got diverted , luckily I stopped. Have heard stories of PL train mangers being taken round Hullavington by Exeter drivers despite the TM not signing the road!
