I have to say that it was Paul Merton on TV which set me off into thinking about going on this route, previously I had only been as far as Ravenglass on one of those 1970s Merrymaker day trips.
I live in Leicester, and Monday afternoon caught the Cross Country 170 to Birmingham New St, a station which up above the platforms was unrecogniseable to the one I remember from the 80s.
Time was on my side, and as I was travelling First class with Virgin Trains I went into the lounge, it was OK but nothing to get excited about.
My train left New St about 5-15pm, the journy to Preston was default, with only one drinks service to wash down my Tuna salad. Fare was about £30 with railcard.
Monday night at the nearby preston central Premier inn for £42 plus £8.99 for all you can eat brekkie the next morning.
I was going on the 1004hrs to Barrow, 37402 leading 4 coaches which I think are Mk2. My research wasn't what it should have been and I didn't know it was Push and Pull also that the doors had bars on them, fare £3.95 with railcard
No door hanging but plenty of sound vibes in the front coach, similarly on the 1140hrs from Barrow to Carlisle with 37425 and my fare was £11.95. I thoroughly enjoyed the journey with plenty to see and plenty of coastal scenery. The train was on time throughout, arriving Carlisle about 1427hrs.
Southbound it was to be the 1515 from Carlisle to New St, again standard Pendolino fare with 2 drinks services, the Glasgow crew alight at Wolverhampton and are replaced by local staff, the fare again was around £30.
I caught the 1822 Birmingham to Stansted 170 to Leicester, it was a good trip and one that I hope to repeat later in the summer.

In conclusion, after the panoramic views from the Preston/Barrow/Carlisle windows the Pendolino is like looking out of a letterbox, I definitely prefer the Virgin East Coast staff/service and stock to the Virgin WC set up.

I did the same train a week last Monday (6th). They ended up using the same train after Barrow so really it was a direct Preston to Carlisle train. It was a beautiful day too.

I find after St Bee's the journey deteriorates to Maryport. It does look quite depressing on that stretch.

It was indeed MK2s you'll have had on the loco-hauled sets.

£30 Carlisle to Birmingham in First Class is a good fare, about 168 miles I believe, so you did well there.

Surprised you prefer East Coast to West Coast, I'm the other way around. Not sure how many of the forum would agree with me of course!

I have found that Virgin East Coast are a little more generous with their food and drinks service than West Coast, but I do admit to not travelling West Coast much.
I don't mind where I go to too much if I can find decent First Class fares (sometimes standard), to that end GWR seem expensive these days.
On my trip from Birmingham to Preston I sat towards the centre of the coach and noticed how smooth a ride it was, on my return I sat over the bogies, why did I do that?
The main thing is the restricted view from the Pendolinos, it is OK from your window but if you want to look across the opposite side then it is pretty poor, although I no longer collect numbers anyway,I just like to see what is going on.:)
It was fabulous to hear the Class 37 growling away and also the noise of the brakes being applied on the mark 2 coaches. Seeing the 37 with West Highland Terrier on the side and plain blue made me recall some happy times in Scotland in the 80s, times when you could have a footplate ride for parts of the journey as well.

See, my problem is less friendly crews on the East Coast. It doesn't matter if you have more drinks runs if your crew are miserable! Mind you, if I had to ride up and down on MK4s all day I think I'd be fed up too  There's also some decent tilt available on the WCML, something the poor souls on the ECML don't get to enjoy!

The 37 racket must have been quite nostalgic indeed, it would be for me right now too as I've not had a 37 since late July 2015. Far too long ago for my liking...
