Purchasing a West Midlands Day Tripper at Wolverhampton

For a same day return journey from Liverpool to Birmingham International in early August with flexible time split tickets, I'd like to have the additional coverage/flexibility that comes with a West Midlands Day Tripper instead of a Wolverhampton-International off peak day return (and it's £1 cheaper!).

As my planned outward journey includes changing at Wolverhampton, are there likely to be any problems buying this from the ticket office in Wolverhampton station as it seems I can't buy it on board or from the ticket office or a TVM at Lime Street. If the Wolverhampton ticket office is closed, do the TVMs at Wolverhampton sell this ticket or would I need to go to the bus station?

Have you compared the price with a Liverpool to Crewe day return and a West Midlands Day Ranger ticket?

You can buy the Daytripper from the TVM at Liverpool, either the Avanti or Northern ones.

Agreed there, might be a small saving with a Liverpool - Crewe day return & the West Midlands Day Ranger compared with a Liverpool - Wolverhampton return & a Daytripper ticket.

That's great to know about the TVMs at Liverpool - thank you.

I'd looked at the Liverpool-Crewe + WM Day Ranger option and it comes out a bit more expensive at the times I want to travel.

If you have issues at Liverpool - Wolverhampton's ticket machines definitely sell the Daytripper (and unless changed since i last used one, it was one of the 'quick buy' options)

Although if you plan to use the daytripper on the buses (and trams) it might be easier to pop to the ticket office to get it on the Daytripper stock. Less chance of a bus driver/tram conductor claiming it isn't valid

I've never had a problem with a DayTripper on orange stock (except on a bus where I was allowed to board but we think the driver flagged it as an irregularity on the ticket machine!)

Thanks for the update about the bus station. I was going by the information on the National Rail website:

Availability

Purchase Location

Available from the 'nNetwork' Travel Shops at Birmingham New Street train station or Wolverhampton bus station as well as at any staffed station in the 'nNetwork' (Network West Midlands PTE area).
Can also be purchased on buses or at any Midland Metro tram stop.

Last time I got one at Wolverhampton (about a year ago) the ticket office issued it on orange bog roll stock, which was slightly disappointing. Though no problems with acceptance on the trams (I didn't get any buses).

When I was last there (October 2021) I bought my Daytripper from a ticket machine.

It was then a credit card size ticket rather than on bog roll.

Worth remembering that the blue stock has been/is being phased out.

WMR ticket offices seem to always sell them on bog roll, in my experience.

And I guess if a bus driver decides to go down the "not valid on this bus as it's a train ticket" route its only £2 to pay out before claiming it back from the bus company
