I decided to bite the bullet and give this a go today - £33 walk up fare (with Railcard) from Newcastle to Belfast via Ayr and the ferry seemed like a nice cheap adventure!

No ticket checks until past Paisley on the whole trip - was expecting a few quizzical looks from a Belfast ticket but the one conductor who checked wasn't fussed. Everything was nicely on time too, to the extent that I managed to arrive in Edinburgh at 0912 and have a brisk walk over for the 0915 to Glasgow (which actually leaves at 0917).

It was a little confusing at Ayr - as the station is still rather all over the place due to the saga with the old hotel. The bus leaves from the temporary car park on the east side of the station, though there's no signage to this effect.

Thankfully, the bus is all branded up and easy to spot, and it arrived at 12:20, just as the connecting train arrived from Glasgow (I aimed for an earlier one just in case). The driver had a cursory glance of tickets then we got underway at 12:32 (13 minutes early!) I assume that the procedure is the driver checks with station staff that everyone's off the train and simply leaves. So, if you arrive into Ayr early and end up going for a wander, aim to be back by 12:20-12:25.

The bus trip was actually quite pleasant. There were only 10 or so of us on board and the road hugged the coast for a good stretch past Girvan. We arrived just past 13:40, just in time to see the inbound sailing parking up. We were dropped off at the small but modern terminal and it was a pretty easy check-in procedure. I was just asked if I had a train ticket, for my name and was handed a boarding pass  We went through security at 14:20ish and boarding at 15:00.

And so, I'm now sat in the bar and we're pulling away from Cairnryan a little early! I can't exactly knock the experience - it's by no means quick but excellent value for what you get.

Welcome to Belfast! I hope you have a good time here!

My experience with SailRail has been good - I wished they ran the connecting coach more frequently, ideally 3x per day, to connect with the three most sensible sailings (7:30, 11:30, and 15:30 from Belfast, 11:30. 15:30, and 19:30 from Cairnryan)

The views from the coach are indeed very nice!

Following up - we arrived on time (and passed a hefty cruise ship on the way in). Transfer to the bus to Belfast was pretty simple, too. Turn right out of the terminal and there's a bus stand for the 96. The Citylink (well, today it was an Airport Express branded bus) to Europa also pulls up alongside.

Nice and easy - quick tap of the bank card and it only took 15 mins to reach Belfast. I then went along to Lanyon Place to get an iLink for tomorrow and had some dinner back in the centre.

Like I say, not a way I'd get to NI if I was in a hurry (easyJet runs 3x daily from Newcastle and the flight takes 35 mins) but a genuinely fun and relaxing way to cross the Irish Sea.

Translink always uses an airport express branded bus for that, as they have more space for luggage

Funnily enough, Translink Ulsterbus runs the service to Glasgow on the other side of the Irish Sea as well, even though it is branded citylink there!

Agreed! Have a good time in NI and Belfast

Think the problem with the coach is that the 10 passengers that the OP experienced is very much the summer rush, when it ran more frequently Id often see it with at best a couple of passengers in winter it was normally empty.

yeah, the sailrail tickets aren't used that much, I've been the only passenger on more than one occasion, though I have also experienced the coach being full twice

I think it's a combination of it being a niche market, with many people not being aware of SailRail, and not many people thinking a train ticket to/from belfast would exist!

Yes, few people seem to know the fare exists. Weirdly, from Edinburgh the through fare is lower (with a Railcard) than just paying for the ferry as a foot passenger port to port.

As a Scottish resident of a certain age I have bought a Sail rail ticket from Edinburgh to Belfast and actually used Citylink coaches for the Glasgow to Cairnryan link (free other than the £1 reservation fee) when there were no trains to Ayr due to the hotel fire as it seemed simpler

Just had a look at Citylink and it operates 3 times daily to meet the ferries. Interestingly, the first two tomorrow are full. It seems that more foot passengers are utilising Citylink rather than the train.

I think the 923 is actually a Edinburgh-Glasgow-Ayr-Stranraer coach on which OAPs travel free and which happens to call at Cairnryan, I don't know how many people actually catch the ferry.

I don't know either but I'd say it's a good bet that Citylink aren't getting anywhere close to filling a coach with people wanting to go from Glasgow to Stranraer at 08.20 on a Monday morning.

As there is also a third service between Glasgow and Belfast, namely Hannon Coach who run 2 trips each way and do not take any local traffic, it is a reasonable assumption that there is in fact a solid demand for ground transport on this corridor.

When I used the 1220 from Glasgow on an early October Tuesday last year (not a peak time) there must have been 25 or so alighting at Cairnryan for the ferry check-in. I'd expect more people on a Monday morning in August with weekend visitors returning home. Yes, there will be some people travelling to other destinations, including Ayr which is also a stopping point. Only a handful of people getting on/off at Ayr when I used it

I haven't checked but I suspect last minute air fares would be a lot higher than the various boat/rail/coach fares. RailSail remains the same price until the day prior to travel.

from experience, the vast majority of traffic is Glasgow-Ferry-Belfast actually. The destination from Glasgow is often listed as Belfast, and in the opposite direction the coach waits for a delayed ferry. It's operated by Translink Ulsterbus as well.

Whenever I've travelled with the coach, almost everyone took the ferry leaving less than 5 people headed onwards to Stranraer.

Occasionally, I've seen people use it for Stranraer-Cairnryan. I believe they were stena line workers using it to commute to/from home.

On top of that, Stena often runs extra coach services during the peak summer season to Glasgow and Ayr, advertised as day trips

Is it possible to get a walk up ticket from Cairnryan (Stena) to Ayr on the coach service? I currently have a foot passenger only ticket from Belfast to Cairnryan on the 11.30 sailing on Fri - I had intended to take the local bus and 'do' the Stranraer line. Scotrail have done their worst, however, and the 17.23 is not running. Citylink are fully booked - my only other option seems to be Stagecoach to Girvan and a rather tight connection to the train. I'm staying in Glasgow on Fri night. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

I don't recall the driver having any facility to sell tickets (and you can't buy a rail ticket for Cairnryan-Glasgow).

It might well be worth your while just buying a Rail & Sail ticket (£35 or £23.30 with a Railcard). If you're already in NI you'd need to phone Stena to book IIRC.

No

Bus connections are available to and from Ayr railway station for passengers on selected sailings who have pre-booked a Rail & Sail ticket to or from Glasgow, Edinburgh and other rail destinations in Britain.

They do not offer tickets that don't include the ferry.

Refund your ferry ticket (if you can) and either buy a sailrail or alternatively Hannon Coach have availability on their 14.00 from Belfast Grand Central

Update - flying EasyJet Belfast Intl. to Glasgow for £43.99 - Rail / Sail fully booked. I'll have another attempt at the Stranraer line later in the year if Scotrail ever get their act together. Checking out Belfast GC tomorrow.

Update2. Air travel is not all it is cracked up to be is it? Basically taken me all day from Belfast to Glasgow for a 25min flight. 2.5 hrs late (so no compo) - inward aircraft delayed at Gatwick by thunderstorms. Aldergrove is a dump - full of drunks off to sunny climes. Very tardy checkin leading to further delay. Unbelievably heavy traffic on the M8 into Glasgow - Airport Express was a slow crawl. Hey ho - finally in the pub!

The 923 no longer runs to and from Edinburgh. I used to wonder if anyone is using the service from Edinburgh to Ayr. I believe there is a late coach from Glasgow to Stranraer which gets the coach back to the depot.

Last minute air fares can be high on the two Belfast routes.

I believe this is usually cheaper, especially if you can get a refund on your existing ferry ticket

Now that is surprising! If that is the case then that’s a good sign although not in the case for yourself.
so surprising in fact, that I would suspect it is more likely to be an issue with reservations rather than an actually full service.

Avanti in particular have form of making it impossible to buy RailSail tickets by making the only available trains both "reservations compulsory" and "No reservations available" / not releasing reservations.
