On BBC Radio 4, at 7.15pm this evening, there is a program Screenshot: Trains on screen

Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode jump on board to explore the role of trains on our screens.
This week sees the release of Compartment No 6 - a strange and touching romance set on the Trans-Siberian Railway.

Trains have played a recurring role in film, right from the inception of the genre. Mark is joined by silent film specialist Bryony Dixon and composer Neil Brand to talk about the appeal of the railway for the pioneers of cinema.

And Ellen talks to Compartment No 6 director Juho Kuosmanen and critic Anna Smith about the cinematic opportunities for connection, contemplation and romance while riding the rails.

On BBC Radio 4 last month and next Sunday, April 17th at 10pm, theres an hour long documentary Lines of Duty

The extraordinary untold story of a very British hero. A man called Reg, who risked his life and liberty to save Britain’s railways. The secret document he leaked became known as Britain’s Pentagon Papers - and what started out as an attempt to expose the truth soon became a fight for the freedom of the press.

Fifty years on, Lines of Duty tells the incredible story using the whistleblower’s own unpublished account, brought to life by actor Toby Jones, alongside interviews with many of those involved.

Presented by railway historian and broadcaster Tim Dunn, this remarkable tale lifts the lid on the world of Government secrets, espionage and an undercover fightback by a group of railway enthusiasts.
There is a thread discussing this at

I listened to this. It is only really of interest to film fans. If you have watched silent movies, Brief Encounter and/or the 1970s Murder on the Orient Express (with Albert Finney as Poirot) then you will find something of interest.

We have already had at least three discussions going on this one, which was broadcast as Archive on 4 on 19 March. It is probably best not to start another one.

A pilot episode of Alexei Sayle's Strangers on a Train was broadcast in February. On his podcast he said that there are going to be 7 more broadcast on Radio 4, on a Sunday evening after the Archers. He interviews people on (mostly Cross Country) trains.

The first episode of the series from Cardiff to Portsmouth is on Radio 4 at 7.15pm this evening, July 10th with a couple of repeats on Radio 4 Extra next Friday
Followed by "London to Glasgow" on Sunday 17th July 2022 and "Bristol to Penzance" on Sunday 24th July 2022.

Think there's also going to be a "Birmingham to Edinburgh" episode.

Repeated various times on each following Friday on BBC Radio 4 Extra at 7.30 a.m., at 5.30 p.m., at 10.00 p.m. and also at 5.30 a.m. on the Saturday morning.
