I've subscribed to Readly for the last couple of years as they offer all the railway magazines (except BackTrack and Todays Railways) - plus a few non-railway titles that are of interest to me. I read them on an iPad and it works well. When I subscribed the monthly cost was £7.99, but around a year ago it increased to £9.99, although I still considered this to be decent value for the content I read.

Unfortunately, in recent weeks, Readly have added an 'Article View' box which is displayed on and off at the bottom of every magazine page (except those containing adverts) as you swipe from page to page. It sometimes hides content and can't be switched off - what possessed the developers I do not know. Additionally, Key Publishing have now stopped supplying their titles (Modern Railways, Modern Locomotives Illustrated amongst others), so it got me thinking about whether I wanted to continue my subscription, particularly as my local library provides The Railway Magazine, Railways Illustrated, Rail Express, Traction, Steam Railway, Steam Days, BackTrack and Heritage Railway for free via an App called Libby. It's not as easy to use as Readly, and is a little slower, but once you get the hang of it the magazines can be read as well as those on Readly. In effect, the only title I lose is RAIL, but I'll save £120 a year.

I've just gone through the cancellation process: you're presented with two or three screen attempts to try to get you to stay, the last of which is an offer that reduces your subscription to £5.99 for the next six months. I declined and proceeded to cancel, but thought I'd make other RailUK Forums members/Readly subscribers aware in case they want to save a few quid for the next six months.

With the loss of Modern Railway, I've just cancelled too.

Was tempted by the £5,99 for my Motorsport mags, but I might wait till spring

I've been investigating the alternatives to Readly in view of Key Publishing's departure and from my library, as well as Libby (which I didn't particularly like) they also support Pressreader which I'm finding better.
Also Pressreader includes RAIL but not Backtrack.

I'm not finding MR on Pressreader.... Am I doing something wrong?

Assuming you mean Modern Railways you won't find it on any of the aggregators since Key Publishing seem to have pulled out of that side of the business.

I've not been able to find RAIL in Pressreader, and that's after using the search facility. Does the choice of magazines depend on the subscriptions taken up by your registered local library, I wonder?

It's still there for me with a subscription via North Yorkshire Libraries so it could be dependant on that.
It might be useful to post a list of railway titles available with both Pressreader and Libby (and maybe Readly) then we can see what's available and what's missing?

Back in Geordieland!
I have been a subscriber to Readly for years, I noticed Buses magazine had disappeared but had to google it to find out why. Key publishing appear to have removed all their titles, Classic Military Vehicles has gone too.

I share it with my wife, she loves the knitting and crocheting magazines, I like the firearms motorbikes and Viz comic. They must think I am a strange subscriber.

I imagine Key publishing were not happy with their return, so many titles for a tenner a month when one magazine alone is 6 quid now. It's a shame.

I'm currently on a £5.99 a month (threatened to cancel!) subscription with Readly but I thought I'd check out the alternatives for when the price goes back up to £9.99.

These are the titles I've found on Readly:

Heritage Railway
Narrow Gauge World
Narrow Gauge Steam
Rail
Railways Illustrated
Railway Magazine
Railhobby (Netherlands)
Rail Express
Steam Railway
Steam Days
Steam World
Traction

The free alternatives (with a local library subscription) are Pressreader and Libby.

Titles on Pressreader are:

Heritage Railway
Narrow Gauge World
Narrow Gauge Steam
Rail
Railways Illustrated
Railway Magazine
Railhobby (Netherlands)
Rail Express
Steam Railway
Steam Days
Traction (Only back numbers to 2022)
Trains (USA)
Classic Trains (USA)

Titles on Libby are:

Back Track
Heritage Railway
Narrow Gauge World
Railway Magazine
Rail Express
Steam Days
Steam World
Traction
Trains (USA)
Classic Trains (USA)
Locomotives International

The above titles available on Pressreader and Libby are with a subscription from North Yorkshire Libraries so it may be that other areas will have other selections.

Without a doubt, the Readly app interface is far superior to the other two but I'm not convinced it's worth a tenner a month.

If anyone finds any other magazines that I've missed please add them to this thread.

My own library provides those exact same title via Libby so I'm guessing every UK library is probably the same.

I agree about the Readly app being the best and if the Key Publishing titles had remained I would possibly have continued with it, despite the irriitating yellow Article View box!

I haven't used Pressreader but Libby is pretty awful in comparison to Readly, at least to set up, but I seem to have got used to it. Libby has also had problems for the past couple of weeks with no UK titles being uploaded. I thought my libary might have pulled the plug at first, but they have started being uploaded again in the last couple of days.

Thanks to all who offered the comparisons - I had a Rail sub for the print copy and had queried with ‘Great Magazines’ why I had to quit and re-subscribe simply to pay more and get the digital copy as well. As an avid PressReader user I was unaware it was available on there! The quality of the paper used in Rail is getting worse, so I’ll let this sub lapse and go digital full time. Your tip off was really appreciated!

Although my library gives me access to Presreader via Libby, I find that the majority of publications listed above appear as just the cover page only. The remaining pages are obscured and bear a key symbol, indicating that a subscription is required. That seems to indicate that there are differences between UK libraries, presumably on the basis of what each is prepared to pay for. I intend to query this with my library at some point.

That’s odd - Libby and PressReader are different apps, I’m with 2 different county libraries and both apps let me stack which library to use, but the magazines offered are identical. Are you accessing via a PC? What’s the URL?

I'm acessing the service via the Libby app on either my mobile or a tablet, both running Android. PressReader is shown as an "extra" within Libby, and selecting it produces the following link

With effect from 1st June my library has cancelled their arrangement with Libby (pretty awful App but a decent range of railway titles) to a new provider called Borrowbox.

The Borrowbox App seems to be much better than Libby, but the number of railway titles is much reduced.

Titles previously available via Libby:

Railways Illustrated
The Railway Magazine
Rail Express
Traction
Steam World
Steam Days
Backtrack
Heritage Railway

All replaced with just two titles on Borrowbox:

RAIL
Steam Railway

Ah well...

You're very fortunate in Glasgow - my Council are clearly tightwads!

I am a member of libraries in several boroughs....

Handily I live in a corner of one loc authority area where a mile or so east or west takes me into different borough's with a fourth just about 3miles over a big hill.
