Union calls for ballot for industrial action of Merseyrail staff after talks break down
Liverpool Echo said:
Union chiefs have called for a ballot for industrial action for all Merseyrail staff after talks with the company broke down today.

Representatives from the Rail and Maritime Transport Union (RMT) met with Merseyrail bosses today to discuss the issue of a proposed new fleet of driver-only trains.

The union says the £400m fleet, expected to arrive in 2020, will put the “safety critical” jobs of 220 train guards at risk and demanded that these positions are retained.

But the parties failed to reach an agreement and RMT regional organiser John Tilley said he will now write to the union’s national committee recommending that a ballot on industrial action is now held.

It's on Liverpool Echo anyway, cant paste link for some reason.

Thanks for saying what paper it was in, I've found the article about the rmt deciding to ballot.

Fwiw, I find it to be a nightmare posting links on this site as the mods will reject the post unless half the article is also cut and pasted and I and my tablet seem to struggle to comply :)

Well, it appears that "the iron is hot" once again at Unity House with a strike ballot being announced by the RMT over a fleet of trains not even due to enter service until 2020..

I note that St Helens is within the franchise area of Merseyrail, so it seems most apt that in that town is RMT Solutions Ltd, an established Health and Safety consultancy.

St Helens is Merseytravel but it isn't part of the Merseyrail franchise.

After watching the Liverpool Echo video I think its all extremely predictable from the RMT, ie go for initial heavy handed tactics to try and force Merseyrail into an early submission (After all they can currently take advantage of the obvious reality that no TOC would willingly opt to become the next Southern) :D
