The vast majority of trains towards Middlesbrough (unless they are starting from one of the south facing bays) will use the High level bridge.

Indeed, according to Realtimetrains.co.uk they all do except the Carlisle-Nunthorpe mentioned which uses the connection avoiding the bridge in Gateshead (presumably for route retention).
Of course, anything can happen....
