Daughter is heading Chester to London Return on Saturday for a College Open Day and on searching the Fares on East Coast Trains we saw a cheap fare I’ve not seen before. The fare is ‘Saturday Day Travel Card valid via Rugby’ - £39.80.

Origin – Chester
Destination – London Zones 1-6

Not sure what the ‘valid via Rugby’ bit means as all the trains listed on East Coast Trains as available to use are direct Virgin Pendolino Trains from Chester to London or change at Crewe – all with no stop at Rugby?

As she is going to Egham for the Royal Holloway Open Day I’ve told her she can use the ‘London Zones 1-6’ to do the return across town on the Tube and Waterloo – Egham, but just buy a Return Feltham to Egham to cover the last part of the Journey outside Zone 6 (Feltham being the last stop on that route in Zone 6).

Hopefully this is all OK and I haven’t missed anything – just a bit confused about the ‘valid via Rugby’

The Saturday Day Travelcard is quota-controlled on the outward portion, so your daughter must travel on the booked service for the outward journey. The return is flexible. The train just needs to pass Rugby, not necessarily stop there, so all trains on the WCML would be fine.

A ticket from Feltham to Egham is fine, as all trains stop at Feltham on that route.

Thanks for the advice - she had an outward train in mind which fits the bill and as it's flexible coming back it gives her a bit of leeway.

The via Rugby bit means that the train she uses must physically travel through Rugby. It need not stop there.
