Hi Guys -

I recently applied for a trainee conductor role with Northern Rail, I submitted my application and after a week I received an email inviting me to undertake a numerical reasoning and a verbal reasoning test online.
I completed these tests and i think i must have passed them, as today i have received a further email now inviting me to undertake a Saville Consulting test - there is not much info but the email states the assessment is titled "work strengths" and will take 20 minutes to complete.

Please can anyone help with 2 questions that I have -

1 - Does anyone have any info at all about what these "work strength" assessments entail and what they are looking for?... also is there anywhere i can practise these tests as i was able to practise many numerical reasoning tests online which helped prepare me for my actual test.

2. Does anyone know how many stages there are before you get a face to face interview??
So far i have completed an online application, completed a numeric and verbal reasoning test, and now im abouts to complete a "works strengths assessment" - there seams to be many stages to this process.

Any advice would be great, Thanks,

Hi guys,

I applied for the Northern conductor role before Christmas and was successful at the interview and group assessment stage. I am due to start in April.

In regards to the 'work strengths' assessment, I sat down and completed mine within 20 minutes. I don't believe it is something you can practice, just do it and answer everything as honestly as possible, and don't let your ego get in the way of saying you may have qualities that need some work!

After the wok strengths assessment, I was invited to a group assessment and interview along with 24 others (2 groups of 12 throughout morning and afternoon sessions). I was quite nervous but without reason as the assessors were all friendly people and weren't there to catch you out, just to make sure you are suitable for the role.

Hope this helps...

Thanks for the info it does help alot.

Ive read that the next step is to be invited to an assessment day (if you pass the saville test).

You say there were 24 people invited to the day - do you know how many of those were successful with getting the job?

Also what was involved in the assessment day and how was it structued, was there more tests such as numeric and verbal reasoning, or were you more so required to be assessed on ticket checking and other tests?

Thank you guys, really looking forward to this new career!

The type of question was based on how you answered the 'work strengths' questionnaire. Mine were things like:

'How have you used technology to make your job easier?'

'Name a time when you have had to deal with a difficult customer and how did you resolve the issue they may have had?'

I hope that helps a little, but as I said they are all catered to the individual interviewee.

Mine went by really quickly and I was also asked if I had any questions, to which I had complete mind block! So try and be prepared with some that you want to ask.

The group assessment is based on the research that we were asked to do before hand.

There were no ticket checking exercises or mathematical questions. You have already shown that you have a degree of mathematical know how with the numerical reasoning assessment..

Well done guys, I haven't had an email today, so I'm tipping I haven't progressed this time.
Best of luck to you all.

Nick they normally send out an email if you've been unsuccessful, maybe if you've not had this one you might not be out of the running just yet?

Yea - I thought that was the case. Currently I haven't had an email either way to say if successful or unsuccessful.
Any idea if there is a specific number I can contact to check my applications status?
Thanks

Thanks for the contact Dom.

I still haven't heard anything so being realistic it might not be this time. I have dropped Northern an email so will await and see.

Best Wishes

Hi All -
Quick update to try and help others understand the process...

I contacted Northern on the tel number - they said they hadnt received my results back yet from the Work Strengths assessment, hopefully i should find out later this week.
Apparantly applications are checked in batches, so if there are others out there still waiting you might not be out of the running just yet!

Just to over complicate things further, i have received an alert this morning informing there are now trainee conductor vacancies at Sheffield (which is closer to home for me travel wise than Leeds). I have spoke with Northern on the recruitment tel number and they have explained you can only have 1 live application in at any 1 time - therefore if i want to be considered for Sheffield i need to withdraw my Leeds application.

Also for info, if you take the SHL tests and pass them then you dont need to retake them again.

Hope this info helps others
