Hiya, I’m after some advice on fares for getting into town on a weekday. I will be travelling in around midday but likely coming back in peak time around 6pm. I am going to soho so understand Tottenham court round is the best, especially if I travel in from shenfield which isn’t far from me.
It would be good to be able to tube hop a bit but not essential.
Can anyone give the cost please, TfL Facebook said it’s separate to the journey cap as shenfield isn’t included on the zones.
I could travel in from Chelmsford or shenfield, in the old day I’d have got a travel card and not thought much else but an anytime one of them is £35!!
Any advice welcome

Can it be done from Shenfield to Tottenham Court Road for cheaper than £23.70 for an Off Peak Day Travelcard (or £15.60 with a Network Railcard or similar discount)?

I’ve actually just had a look at the greater anglia off peak rules and the evening ones don’t apply in the school holidays which I wasnt aware of so looks like I can do it all on an off peak travelcard as suggested about so thanks!

Oyster or Contactless can be used for this journey, with a daily off-peak fare cap of £23.70 which reduces to £15.60 if a railcard is held on Oyster.

So, is this one of those instances where the cost of a paper ticket (assuming one is actually available) is essentially the same as the contactless equivalent?

An Off Peak Day Travelcard from Chelmsford or Shenfield doesn't have evening restrictions on Greater Anglia services at any time of year.

In the case of Shenfield, an Off-Peak Day Travelcard is valid on trains that arrive at Liverpool Street from 10am onwards (the earliest ones being the 09:38 Greater Anglia semifast or 09:20 Elizabeth line stopping service); there is no evening peak restriction on a Travelcard from Shenfield, regardless of the day of the week or whether it's the school holidays. That rule applies only to Off-Peak tickets from further afield (such as Ipswich).

If you use contactless or Oyster from Shenfield, you'll be charged off-peak fares for any journeys started between 09:30-16:00, or from 19:00 onwards - however, the off-peak daily cap applies to all journeys started from 09:30 onwards. So even if you return between 16:00-19:00 (where peak fares apply to contactless/Oyster), you'll still be capped by the off-peak daily cap of £23.70.

Bear in mind that some Railcards - such as Network and Two Together Railcards - can't be applied to an Oyster card. So you are better off buying a paper or smartcard Off-Peak Day Travelcard to benefit from the Railcard discount if you have one of these.

Thanks all for your help, I will have a 15 year old with me so I will get a paper ticket for us so she can be charged a child’s rate.
Wish I’d just asked here instead of faffing on the TfL website and chat!!
