Hi,
I am having nightmare journeys on bus route 81 which takes 1.5 hrs from Slough to hounslow!
Please could I get some advice on route and fare(daily return/monthly) for journey between Slough and hounslow central tube station?

Ryes,
Arnie

Does it really take 1.5 hours every time?

Where is your actual final destination?

The other option would be to take the train from Slough to Southall and then the 120 bus or maybe cycle?

Slough to Hounslow via monthly+ train ticket and PAYG Oyster bus should work out about £8.80/day based on a 5 day commute pattern. £6/day without the bus.

Still lots of traffic from Southall to Hounslow though I should think.

You could consider:
Bus 75 Slough - Heathrow (prices Slough Areas 1 & 2 £24/week)
Picadilly line Heathrow - Hounslow Central (Zones 4-6 Travelcard £25.20/week)

Totalling a rather pricey £49.20/week and still taking an hour :(

The advantage of this route is that outbound it doesn't matter if you miss a tube train as they're so frequent.

Is that from the timetable? As the 81 is Timetabled to take just shy of an hour, so if there are traffic jams affecting the 81 and making it one and a half hours, then they are likely to affect the 75 too (I know they don't go the exact same way but traffic in the vicinity can affect most local roads).

In terms of a route which avoids stage carriages, the only thing I can think of is Great Western to Ealing Bdy, the District line to Acton Town and the Piccadilly line from there. This is very expensive and is timetabled to take between an hour and 15 and an hour and a half including changes!

Or fGW to Hayes & Harlington, Heathrow Connect to Heathrow and then the Piccadilly. There's also a bus from West Drayton to the airport. Slough is outside the London zones, but they start at West Drayton except that Hayes to Heathrow by train is excluded.

You could also go via Windsor and work your way to Hounslow SWT station and walk in to the centre of Hounslow, again this would take ages and probably be very expensive though.

It would really help to know whether you are catching the underground at Hounslow Central or whether that is your final destination

Also on which part of the journey is the worst congestion? Is it before or after the airport?

For instance you could maybe change buses and catch the tube from Heathrow Terminals 1-3 or change onto a 423 and go to Terminal 5 and catch the tube from there

Is this a case (like Epsom or Redhill) where a zones 1-6 (or less) travelcard is used for a much longer journey as London Buses operate beyond the Travelcard boundary?

I'd stick with the 81 personally. If the bus called at Heathrow Central or T5, you could change for the Piccadilly line all for the price of a Z4-6 travelcard. Otherwise, I'd stick to a bus and tram pass or Oyster PAYG for £1.40 per journey which is a bargain in comparison to other routes locally despite the jams.

Yes, pretty much all TfL bus routes that go outside the GLA boundary are still on the same fare (i.e. 1.40 a go with Oyster PAYG) / bus pass or travelcard deal as bus journeys wholly within GLA. Therefore, if the journey is solely Hounslow - Slough, a TfL bus pass / Oyster is fine, or a travelcard valid in any zone/s.

Travelcard / Oyster is however not valid on FGW trains west of Hayes & Harlington unless the bit outside zone 6 is paid for separately, and they are not valid on First Berkshire service 75 outside London (I'm not sure they are inside London either - although there is the free travel zone round Heathrow)

Someone has mentioned Heathrow Connect - Last time I looked, that's not Oyster / Travelcard-able from Hayes & Harlington to Heathrow.

TfL Journey Planner suggests most of the alternatives, i.e.

75/6 to Heathrow then piccadilly line

FGW to Hayes & Harlington then H98

FGW to Southall then bus 120

are all going to take about an hour.

It does suggest the Slough - FGW - Ealing Broadway - Acton Town - Hounslow option as taking slightly less than an hour, but don't know how many trains an hour provide good connections here. It's the least likely to be affected by traffic jams, but potentially the most costly option, as you'd need a Slough to zone 3 travelcard for it.

Oyster is not valid on FGW services west of West Drayton, although not valid on Heathrow Connect between Hayes and Heathrow.

A travel card for any zones or bus and tram pass is valid for any TfL bus service and there is only one fare on absolutely all of them. No First Berkshire buses accept them but, as you say, there is the Heathrow Freeflow area where they are free - the green area on this map:
