I've cycled along the cycle path past South Bermondsey station a few times and was surprised to find the station entrance apparently buried along the footpath/cycle path with - so far as I could see - no access to any nearby roads or buildings. Does this station actually have any direct street access, or can it only be reached by walking 200 m along the footpath?

That makes me wonder whether it would be more useful to re-site the station to where the railway crosses Rotherhithe New Road (about 200m towards London Bridge) - which would also have the advantage (with some reworking of the track layout) of allowing trains on the line to New Cross Gate to call there. I can't imagine its current location is useful to very many people.

Maybe not strictly relevant to the present day situation but, back in the 1980s, when I was a guard at Brighton, we used to work a 20 38 London Bridge to Redhill all stations via Peckham Rye, Tulse Hill and Crystal Palace. South Bermondsey was the first stop on that service and never, ever - on at least twenty occasions - did I see anyone get on or off at that station.

Could it be closed when the Surrey Canal Rd station opens on the other side of the stadium?

Thus reverting to the pre-1920s location. The present location has always been accessed by footpath from the Bricklayers' Arms direction AFAIK.

It's not a station I ever have to use but I do pass through occasionally. More people to my observation use it than 20 or so years ago, but the only times I noticed it being really busy was when Millwall were playing at home.

Hi
Despite appearances, South Bermondsey is actually quite a busy station for workers on surrounding industrial estates, and my daily commute since 2008. There are always people on the platform when I use it, which offers quite a good panoramic view. On match days it is heaving. The station is approached by steps from Ilderton Rd.

Thousands of homes have and are being built around the bottom of the Old Kent Road and Ilderton Road within walking distance of South Bermondsey station so it'll only get more popular.

As part of Millwall's ground development project improved access should be coming and it'll be much needed. That will bring thousands more homes in high density blocks. Some others are already underway nearby closer to Bermondsey/Deptford.

Closing it is never happening with all that happening even with a new London Overground station limited to 5-car trains.

It should really be staffed and see improved services if Southern/DaFT want to capture revenue from nearby residents. It's not the most welcoming place at night

It's the main station for away fans going to The Den, with its direct path to the away end, and its lack of road access is really useful for segregation purposes after the game too.

I've been to The New Den numerous times and, depending on the profile of the fixture, they do let fans mingle before and after the game at the station. I guess there will be times when they don't though.

For local derbies, away fans are kept back for a long time after the game, 45 minutes I think on my last visit. I assume home fans were allowed to use South Bermondsey during this period, as they certainly weren't when we were slowly allowed to enter the station. Which is a pretty grim station anyway, even if the view is good!

That station will have no direct trains to London Bridge so i imagine that would be an extremely unpopular move. A very large percentage of South Bermondsey passengers seem to travel to and from London Bridge station. There is no reason not to keep both stations open.

Not just local derbies. Most "big" teams in the Championship e.g. Leeds. Definitely happened to Wolves and, l'm told Birmingham, when they were in the same division as Millwall.

Tends only to happen to perceived "smaller" teams with no fan issues.
