South West Tra8ns free weekend tickets are still valid on South Western Railway.

Just had a guard who didn't believe me and said he didn't need to check because he is right.

iIexplained no one had questioned it so far todat and I had been travelling since 7 am. I then explained this constisted of gateline staff at Guildford, Exeter and guards on trains to and form Exeter.

As gh had enough of talking to me, he let me continue, after putting a cross over the ticket. He also said he hadn't seen one in 5 years. Although he lwt me go at this point, when I had said I wouldnt buy a train ticket, he said that was the wrong answer.

He did want me to look up if it was valid though as he was interested, which was something.

So of I went to post here and look it up. In the mean time the guard came across someone on the train who works at the Salosbury gateline.

He came back to say I was right and he was wrong. So I thanked him for coming back and all ended well, apart from the cross through the ticket but that doesn't bother me as I will just explain why.

I told him I buy the cheapest season ticket and have a day out once a year.

He suggested I have a screenshot of the notice allowing it in future.

I apologies. I 2as a bit str3ss3d at the time and thought I had corrected it all before I needed to get off the train.

I will amend it now.

I have now corrected it. If you still don't understand it then let me know. Perhaps I should have linked to this post.

Are these still useable?

I still have a drawer full of SWT free "weekend day out" tickets that I can't use because I no longer have a gold card. If I got a SWR Gold Card, would they be valid again?

I have a load of these still.

Back when SWT ran the franchise, if you were an annual Season ticket holder (in SWT area) you got 6 free weekend (actually from Friday evening+public holidays as well as the obvious Saturday+Sunday) tickets for travel anywhere on their network all day long (so basically a SWT train day rover) not just the routes your season ticket covered. You could also use them for anyone travelling with you and this was a part of their great value.

They also rolled over from year to year if you didn't use them AND when SWR took over they agreed to honour them (basically forever). All that is required is an annual season ticket that still has validity at time of travel.

They also were valid for whatever class of ticket you had as a season ticket holder.

I've just looked on the SWR website and found this:

Will I still receive the six free passes when I buy my annual season ticket?

We will be continuing to accept the free weekend travel tickets you were offered by the previous franchisee, and these will be valid for use as long as you maintain a Gold Card season ticket for a SWR route and the original terms and conditions of issue will apply. We will not be offering these to customers that buy or renew their ticket after the 19 August 2017. You will continue to receive the many other Gold Card benefits with an annual season ticket.

Not sure if I have any in a drawer any more but I assumed they would honour it if you had continuous season tickets, which covid stopped for me! Not sure if they would go to the bother of proving you didn't have continuous season tickets but that was enough for me to not push my luck.
Shame they aren't a thing any more!

they never needed to be continuous (or for the same route)

My understanding was that originally South West Trains would sent the 6 free tickets to anyone one who purchased a season ticket from then. Then they changed the rules to they would only send them to you if you had a season ticket priced by South West Train.

Some years when I had a season ticket priced by them, they didn't send them. However, some years when I had a season ticket not priced by them but valid on part of the route, they did sent them. In either case, I never contacted them to ask why I didn't get them when I should have or got them when I shouldn't have.
