Hello, as you probably read i’ve got a new job at south eastern (my first on the railways) and i’m just curious as to how the free travel works and if somebody could explain it to me as i see it mentions family as well.

Free travel for yourself for leisure, duty and work purposes on Southeastern. I am not sure if it is still reciprocal with GTR (Thameslink & Southern) for new starters.

You'll also be entitled within a certain amount of time (usually 3-6 months) to a Rail Staff Leisure Card ("priv") which gives you 75% off leisure travel. If you'd be commuting in to your home location/depot via a different TOC you can a discounted season ticket. Also a FIP card which gives you discounts on international travel.

Family & friends varies from TOC to TOC, but it is often only spouse/partner and dependent children and that can normally only be used for leisure & educational purposes. Someone from Southeastern will probably be able to advise on specifics.

And I can confirm that spousal and dependent privileges are limited to leisure and travel for education only.

Most years you will also get a family and friends card, which you can use 4 times to take someone who doesn’t fall into the above category with you, on off peak services only.

On SE company induction, they will usually explain these things in more detail for you.

It’s a 6 month wait for the “priv” card and also for spouse/children benefits. 1 year for the international benefits. There is no discount for TfL.
