Ignorance is no defence, therefore yes.
I agree it's not a defence against a Byelaw prosecution. But, assuming a situation where the ticket machine is on the other platform, out of view of someone entering the station and boarding a train and there's no sign indicating such, have I shown dishonesty or an intent to avoid payment sufficient to support a RoRA prosecution?

It makes you wonder who on earth would pay extra just to get the same seat as you get in standard except that all you get extra is a seat with an antimacassar that says "First Class" on it!
I would imagine a person who is very well off, so the extra money they have to pay is of no consequence.
