Probably a sign of my age rather than fact but wasn't the bigger of the two M&S's refurbished about two years ago? Hoardings are up and sounds like another back to the concrete, bottom up refurb.

Looks like a bit of a rolling programme by M&S / SSP - the Euston one is currently shut for a refurb too....

I was surprised to see Euston closed for refurb - it wasn't done that long ago and certainly wasn't in a poor condition. I wonder if there were reliability issues with the fridges or something (or perhaps the refrigeration is leased so has to be replaced on a specific schedule?)

So just to be clear the one that is closed for refurb is the one next to the Eurostar ticket office, and not the one between Boots and The Barrel Vault?

The Barrel Vault opened in 2018.

The M&S was very open, I can imagine they will be installing entrance and exit doors. And squeezing in more, narrower aisles.

I haven't been in since but literally a couple of months after reopening, the M&S in Victoria station (by the taxi rank/bus station) also shut in December for a few weeks and reopened last week (I believe) with the same hoarding that's outside the St Pancras branch - have they done yet more refurbishment work here? It seemed quite bizarre and I was wondering if it was something like faulty fridges rather than another planned refurb, but the closure seemed to last a long time - the first morning it was unexpectedly closed I'm sure there were still staff in there and it looked like some things were out in the bakery section.

If I remember correctly the M&S at St Pancras was much larger when it first opened. I seem to remember it occupied the existing unit and what is now the Barrel Vault. It stocked clothing as well as food - I think clothing was mostly in the area that is now the Barrel Vault.

In 2018 the store was reduced in size, food was retained but clothing removed. The space formerly occupied then became the Barrel Vault. If the refrigeration in the food store is original it is now more than 15 years old and will be approaching the end of its life, so refrigeration replacement could be the reason for the refurbishment.

There was still a clothing part there recently. You can see it in the Google Streetview dated June last year.

Never been in that part of the shop myself. Looked like it was all women's clothes!

My memory is that it was larger in the pre-Barrel Vault era, but I don't think it took the whole space. It did have a separate section to the right for clothing.

I bet there's some emergency men's work trousers and shirts right up the back somewhere! Men's clothes are always furthest from the doors.
