Hello,

I have a couple of hours to kill in Stamford soon.

This is not my part of the world.

Does anyone have any advice on anything railway related that might be worth a look.....?

Even a Railway Arms will do.....

Thanks

Rog

There's Robert Humm's excellent railway bookshop actually within Stamford station.

You could quite easily spend a couple of hours there [and most of your savings, too!].

EDIT: Just pipped at the post by eastdyke!

At least we can both recommend it!

The old station building at Water Street is now part of a sheltered housing complex. However the Midland Railway station (the current station) has some splendid architecture, including the signal box, though slightly tatty.

Situated in the main station building is Humms Bookshop, a specialist in transport publications etc.

I will add my voice to the Humm option - easily the best railway bookshop I've been in. The only downside is that your bank balance might take a hell of a hit once you're inside ;)

After looking round the bookshop, if you're feeling a bit athletic and like old station buildings, have a look at:

The old Great Northern station which was the terminus of the branch from Essendine, and from Wansford. It can be seen just north of the Midland line as it exits the tunnel east of the current Stamford station.

It's probably about 10-15 mins walk from the station, through the estate, onto the minor road heading for the town centre (there's some gardens on your left, then the river). Go straight ahead at the traffic lights instead of turning left to cross the bridge into the town centre. After 1/4 mile where that road turns sharp right, there's a new housing development straight ahead of you, and you can pick out the old Stamford East, a nice stone building, now converted into two houses:

Former railway station in Tudor style, designed by William Hurst and built in 1856. Syston and Peterborough Railway. It closed to passengers in 1957 and to goods traffic in 1963. It is now converted to two houses. Listed Grade II.

The town is olde worlde in places and has been used for filming Middlemarch and Pride & Prejudice amongst others. Loads of pubs, typical town centre, i.e. loads of building societies and estate agents. Bacially, typical small market town.

However, built out of the local Barnack Sandstone, a very pleasant one:

Nice place for photos of ECML. The tracks where the two branch lines - Stamford and Bourne - diverged can be just about picked out, even from trains - but I couldn't see any remains of the station. The high speed line has been thoroughly re-engineered and upgraded, wiping out all former traces. There's a good farm overbridge about 300 m north of the main road bridge of the A6121, fine views northwards - you can see trains coming for several miles. On Google Maps (satellite) the routes of the branch lines are quite visible.

As already mentioned above, the over bridge at Essendine north of the A6121 provides good views, particularly of southbound trains. The only thing to consider is the wires getting in the way when taking pictures.
