I requested yesterday for help getting from East Midlands Airport to Leeds, and got some fantastic advice. Unfortunately we could not book the flight we wanted.

We are now booked on a flight into Stansted Airport tonight landing at 17:30.
We would greatly appreciate advice on the best way to get to Leeds, by rail or coach/bus or both.

There is myself and my wife, I have a senior rail card but not my wife.
It is just one way.

Again the best deal is good, however we would rather pay more to get home as quickly and easily as possible.

Red Spotted Hanky is quoting around £136 for the two of us for a three and a half hour journey with two changes one at Peterborough and then at Grantham.
This seems a lot of money for a disjointed journey.

Any help as always is very much appreciated

Catch a bus to Luton Airport Parkway, then get the 19:51 East Midlands Trains service to Leeds (arr 23:05), Costs £50.50 for a Super Off Peak Return and is a direct train (woo!)

Thanks, that is good price wise and also direct, but nearly a 4 hour journey with nearly a 2 hour wait.
Like I said happy to pay more for something a bit quicker.
Cheers all the same. :)

you can split at Peterborough. Non-discounted single from Stansted to Leeds (not via London) is £107.50. However, Stansted-Peterborough is £20.50 and Peterborough-Leeds is £60.40, total £80.90

Can save a couple of pounds by splitting at Peterborough (but hardly worth it in my view).

Remembering that returns in UK are (in many cases) only £1 more than the single, are you sure you definitely won't be going back to Stansted?

Finally, depending where in France you are coming from, it may be worth looking at prices for train all the way (French domestic train to Paris, Eurostar Paris Nord to London St Panc, East Coast from London to Leeds).

No!!

Stansted to Leeds single is £85, return £86 without a railcard, and £56.10 single or £56.75 return for the person who does have one.

Hence why I said barely worth it.

I'm assuming that if people are having to rush back to England from abroad at zero notice, that there is a family/personal circumstance which is a lot more worrying to them than saving three quid.

yes, you're right, didn't notice those prices. I always used to split Peterborough & Grantham when doing Stansted-Nottingham which save more than that

There is a National Express coach at 1840 which costs £35 each but doesn't arrive until just after midnight.

Unfortunately, long distance travel on the day is expensive. Advance tickets are generally not available on the day of travel, and the cheapest available ticket showing origin "Stansted Airport" and destination "Leeds" is the £82 Anytime Single (Railcard £54.10) route via Ely. This gives the £136.10 total you have seen.

Sometimes, you can save by buying more than one ticket. For this journey, I suggest (fares are for 1 adult without railcard):

Stansted Airport - March: Anytime Single £16.20
March - Grantham: Off-Peak Day Single £13.50
Grantham - Doncaster: Off-Peak Single £26.70
Doncaster - Darton: Anytime Day Single £4.70 (valid to Wakefield, on the shortest route Doncaster - Darton)
Wakefield - Leeds: Anytime Day Single £3.80
Total £64.90, saving 21% compared with the £82 Stansted Airport - Leeds route Ely fare.

The train must stop at each station where you change from one ticket to the next. This combination would be valid on these services which all call at each of those stations:

1727 Stansted Airport - 1850 Peterborough 1907 - 1927 Grantham 1942 - Leeds 2054.
1821 Stansted Airport - 1949 Peterborough 1959 - 2020 Grantham 2040 - Leeds 2149.
1921 Stansted Airport - 2050 Peterborough 2125 - Leeds 2258.
2021 Stansted Airport - 2151 Peterborough 2226 - Leeds 0010.

Stansted to Leeds single is £85
STANSTED - LEEDS SSS NOT VIA LONDON is £85 (valid via Ely or Hitchin), SOS Route VIA ELY is £82.
