Tyneside EPB is in store pending start of restoration work at Shackerstone (Battlefield Railway) benefited from a jet wash back in November 2022. The unit lives in a siding in a tree lined cutting and this means it attracts green algae as it is not moved for long periods of time. More recently we have invested in some heavy duty tarpaulins that fully cover the coach bodies. This not only keeps them safe from the elements but also aids security. Restoration is planned to start in the next few years.

With 2-EPB 6307, A video has been created with a few members of the team giving you a tour of the unit and explain some of the challenges it faces.

Both the Tyneside and the 2EPB have facebook pages/groups. Links are below.

2-EPB 6307 https://www.facebook.com/groups/epb6307group

Further update can be found here for Spondon, Mazda and Class 457 on the Suburban Electric Railway Association website below.

More updates will be posted in due course.

Update on 2EPB 6307

The Suburban Electric Railway Association has launched the Bulleid 2-EPB Project to create a working two car unit that will be made available as hauled stock or working push/pull with a class 73 or 33 at heritage railways, this is the last chance you have to do this as four of the five surviving vehicles are now at Sellindge. We have the option to secure the last, and better condition driving motor brake coach from 5176 and agreement has been made with the Northampton Ironstone Railway Trust to both buy it, but on the condition it is moved off site to somewhere else. This vehicle will be restored to run with the driving trailer from 6307 as our initial unit with the driving motor of 6307 to be restored after this set is complete and the vehicles can be rotated over periods of time.

We need your help to make this happen and repaint the two vehicles of 5176 that are already at Sellindge and will serve as both a stores and workshop for the project with the interiors being kitted out for this purpose - this facility is a joint project with the Heritage Electric Trains Trust who own the 5176 open trailer.

No vehicles are getting scrapped - two vehicles are intended to be fully restored and made available for you to ride in. Do you want this to happen Are you with us ?

Well nothing is free in this life and we need to raise the funds to move the coach from Northampton, we also need money for the all over blue repaint of both the stores and workshop vehicles. Please support or fundraiser in any way you can. It the start of a new era for this EPB.

Does anyone have an up-to-date list of vehicles at Sellinge please?
The vintage carriage trust website seems to be kept up to date, it has the second 4DD coach listed there which was only moved a couple of months ago.

A quick update on the 2EPB 6307.

The appeal is still ongoing and currently we are close to £800 raised - https://gofund.me/640169d2

In the background painting has started on the 4EPB Trailer Second. Pictures are attached. Two sides are painted, the doors which are not painted will be swapped around with the 2EPB and will be painted at a later date (Pictures by Dan Holness)

I thought there were 3 carriages of 4 EPB? Has one been scrapped?
There was 4

14351 is still at Northampton Ironstone (the one we would like to purchase)
14352 is at Hope farm
15354 is also at Hope Farm too

The one you are thinking of is 15396 which was at ironstone which was bought by the Swanage Carriage group for spares.

5176 was a complete set at Mid Norfolk Pre 2001, however after some problems, 15354 was sold to the SERA (which then moved to the HETT) for spares for the 4SUB 4732. The other three carriage went to the Northampton Ironstone and two have since moved from there.

Ok. So a update on the 457 as there have been some threads regarding expermental vechiles etc.

The 457 is now at Shepperdswell being moved due to the arrival of the class 365 which is now a cafe/events space. Works that have been carried out

- Fitting of the missing roller blind (we had the rollers, just not the blind.)
- More missing pieces sourced including correct pass-coms, egress assemblies, cab sunvisor and a horn control and fitted.
- Floor being replaced due to rot in the vestible area and seating area.

Future plans include

- Replacement cab seat to be fitted
- Repaint the vechile at some point
- Replace the bodyside windows due to airtight seal has lot its integrity.

Thank you Matt. Update time

Time for an update for 6307

The winter months are always a bit quiet given the short days and the unpleasant weather, but the project has continued to tick over.

The interior of DMB 14352 is nearly complete in re-purposing as a stores and workshop area where we can work on the renovation of interior components. The seating removed for this has been added to our spares inventory meaning we have a large cache of components and will be able to cherry pick the best ones for the interior of the restoration vehicles. 14352 looks very smart in all over BR blue now.

14351, the other DMB from 5176, and the best condition one, remains in Northampton. The vehicle has been bought and paid for so it is now officially part of the project.

We need to move this vehicle to a new home at the end of March, we will be on site in Northampton at the end of February getting it ready for this.

Now For The Serious Bit…..

Our Fundraiser for the movement costs remains open and needs more donations from kind supporters to make all of this happen. Every pound you donate will make this happen so whatever you can spare will be gratefully received and it will make a difference.
You can donate here:
Thanks from us all at Team Kent.

Update on the fundraiser.

Our fundraiser for the movement of the final 4-EPB car at Northampton has now passed the £1000 mark thanks to some recent generous donations. A big thank you to all who have got it this far.
The project has secured the ownership of the vehicle and will be looking to move it away from the Northampton Ironstone Railway at the end of March as it will be part of the 2-EPB project and mean all five of the surviving SR outline vehicles are under the same management.
Details of the fund raiser can be found here:

Update 25/02/2024

Team Kent visited the Northampton Ironstone Railway Trust site today to make last minute checks to S14351 to ensure it is fit to travel by road in a few weeks.

The team would like the thank the NIRT for accommodating their visit. No date is set for the movement but it will be in March.

If there are any more of you wanting to donate to our fundraiser to pay for this move then you can do so on this link.

On the topic of the ex-457 vehicle, is there still a proposal being floated to (re)create a unit ”210003” from a Class 317 donor? I can’t remember which group was proposing this.

This? https://www.brcw.co/project/project-210/
Project 210
The Class 210 diesel electric multiple unit was designed in the early 80’s as a replacement for the multilple units built in the 1950’s and 60’s that were now showing their age. Two prototypes were built in 1982 using different engine and electrical makes, a Paxman and Brush Traction combination in a 4 car outer-suburban version and an MTU and GEC combination in a 3 car inner-suburban layout with coaches based on the Mark 3 coaches then in full production for High Speed Trains and loco hauled services on the west Coast Main Line.

It should be noted that it has no connection with the Suburban Electric Railway Association

That's the one. Raised all of... £230 so far! Absolutely no chance of these dreamers (this dreamer?) doing anything with it. Apart from funding it, you aren't putting a 6RP200L+alternator+cooler group+control equipment on a Class 317 underframe; well not without causing serious structural issues. The original power cars for the 210 reportedly had much more in common with the structure of HST power cars.

Let’s be honest, 210003 won’t happen. They’re not going to get much for £230!
I read that they’d reached an agreement for a unit a while back, so not sure if it’s an old crowdfund. Trying to put a positive spin on things!

Not relevant to this thread. However if you want to see the only ex 210 vehicle that has a safe future in preservation looking it’s best for the summer season please donate here:

A fiver, gets us some brushes, £50 is over two litres of paint. Every pound you donate is a pound the project didn’t have yesterday.
