I wondered if anyone had experience of buying these tickets.
My colleague could not locate these on the TVM (ticket office closed)
When asked to buy on train the guard sold the ticket but advised that they’ve been told not to sell them, and instead to sell CDRs, saying that they’ve been told the Evening/ Sunday ‘Out’ tickets are online only.
SWR website gives different advice.
I haven’t checked myself how easy these tickets are to find on a TVM during the period they’re valid for travel.
These really should be easy to buy because they simply replaced the super off peak in some parts of the SWR network.

I made a short SWR journey at about 1630 today (outside London, travelling in direction towards London.) The TVM offered me the choice of 'evening out' single or standard single.

Never tried to purchase one from a train guard.

Thank you - and was that from the Home / popular tickets screen do you remember?

No, it was to a station that wasn't on the home screen.

I think the sequence was search for station name, select 'one way' then it offered me the choice (it did not explain what 'evening out' was, so I assumed that since it was offering it, then it was valid.)

Excellent thanks for that.

What stations were they buying tickets from and to? I've certainly purchased evening out and Subday out tickets from TMVs.

It is possible the one they wanted wasn't loaded into the TMV for it to sell it.

It would have been Winchfield to London Waterloo

They're not shown on the home screen stil afaik. Each TVM needs to be reprogrammed individually to display them there. They certainly should be available if you go through the screens and search for a paticular station though. Not sure what the guard was on about, there's been no such brief and they can be sold by guards when appropriate.

Thanks. I’ll pass that on.

It sounds like the issue then was that the ticket simply wasn’t on the Home Screen which makes sense as to why they got confused.

That is frustrating because many occasional passengers find the screens confusing at the best of times and the ticket office hours are limited.

The TVM often says ‘popular tickets’ or similar on the Home Screen. . And the most popular are usually the cheapest valid fares!

Noted your point re all machines have to be reprogrammed individually but perhaps the powers that be could delay a major change like this until said programming is done !

My experience at Bournemouth is that the evening out tickets are shown by default on the first page.

I've bought an evening out return to Waterloo from Wokingham ticket office and also the same ticket from the train guard when Wokingham ticket office was closed. This was at Priv rate so I didn't try the machines at Wokingham but ended up having the usual argument with the barrier attendant to get on the train,

The guard is incorrect there. There are promotional fares that are online only, but Evening / Sunday Out are walk-up fares (replacing the old Super Off-Peak / Weekend options) and can be sold on any machine.

The problem might be if they're using the Quick Issue screen on Envoy. If I remember correctly this only used to show a limited range of fares, and new things like this probably aren't on there.

However, if they manually put the start and end point in, there should be no problems issuing it.

The Evening and Sunday Out fares aren't on the quick issue screen, the same issue as the TVMs I imagine, they need reprogramming. It's irritating as it's one of the best features of Envoy imo.

I suspect it either can’t be done on the machine (which is frankly appalling and grounds for complaint to the operator in itself), or, the guard doesn’t know how to do it but lacks the confidence to admit it so makes up an excuse as per training, or, the guard wanted to sell a higher priced ticket which may yield higher commission for them if this is a thing with this operator at this time.

I suspect it’s one of the two former.

It can be done on the guard's ticket machine and easily. If the guard wasn't able to sell one they probably wouldn't have been able to sell any ticket.

I use these tickets, but I also dont usually travel to stations on the quick select.

I've also not bought the type of ticket some of the time, because I dont understand whether it is valid. The pop-ups are really bad user experience.
