THE GREAT SOUTHERN RAILWAY CENTENNIAL RAILTOUR

Saturday 16th November 2024

Route: Dublin Heuston-Kildare (pick up)-Limerick Junction (pick up)-Limerick Check*-Limerick Junction-Killarney (break)-Limerick Junction (set down)-Kildare (set down)-Dublin Heuston

Celebrate the 100th anniversary of the initial amalgamation of the Great Southern Railway in November 1924 with a special railtour over some of its prime routes to Limerick and Killarney.

Booked traction will be a 201 class locomotive and Iarnród Éireann mkIV carriage set, marking the first ever passenger working of these carriages over the Limerick Junction-Limerick line, and an also rare working of such a set on the Kerry branch. 201 class locomotives are also now seldom seen on either route.

*Due to platform constraints it will not be possible to disembark the train at Limerick.

A catering trolley service will be available throughout the tour.

Ticket prices:

Adult Standard Class: €90
Child (Under 16) Standard Class €50
Torc Class: (including exclusive gift): €120
Emerald Class (reclining seats, exclusive gift, and tea/coffee on departure from Heuston): €155

Full timings will be confirmed on our website and social media pages.
Bookings now open at https://www.tailtetours.com/event-details/the-great-southern-railway-centennial-railtour

A few rare loops have been requested, details to be confirmed. The link between the Cork mainline and the Limerick line at Limerick Junction has no scheduled services either, for those who like their 'bobbins'.

Not trying to take away from what looks like a good tour, but I’d have to question that last statement.

Four passenger trains each weekday use the connecting line between Platform 1 at Limerick Junction and the line to/from Limerick.

05:25 Limerick/Dublin Heuston
07:45 Thurles/Limerick
08:55 Limerick/Dublin Heuston
16:25 Dublin Heuston/Limerick

Presumably it means the crossover to the Down Main for Mallow (en route to Killarney)?
But sure that’s used every weekday by the 07:00 Dublin Heuston/Cork?

Ok no train uses a combination of the two sections of track, but both sections of track do see daily use on weekdays.

Sorry you're quite right, should have clarified as a rare loco-operated move. :)

Following enquiries re: departure time, while the paths have yet to be finalised (the IÉ timetable has been in a period of review lately, so naturally and rightly that takes priority over ours), I can confirm that departure from Heuston will give NI participants time to get over from the first Enterprise's arrival in Connolly.

As I type there are 6 Emerald (First) Class places left, with Torc filling up nicely too (Torc = standard seat but with all the add on trimming we're giving Emerarld, morning snack box, souvenir of the day, tea/coffee on departure in the morning). At €120 we feel it compares very well to even the typical Standard Class fares elsewhere.

Times for this tour now confirmed

Dept Dublin Heuston 09:10, (back for 20:40). Dept Kildare 09:35 (back for 20:10), Limerick Junction 10:50 (back for 19:00).

For track bashers, we will be covering Millstreet loop on the return journey.

Now added, this loop was out of use for a while and has no scheduled services through it so might be one those who like their bobbins.
(The tour is scheduled to cross a service train there and with only platform the loop is the only option :) )
