My first post, so be gentle! Coming from Heathrow, we are wanting to get to our hotel in Bankside from an Elizabeth Line station. We'll have luggage so the only real option seems to be a taxi, and probably from a rank rather than trying to hail one at peak hour. I see there is a rank at National Rail Liverpool Street, opposite Platform 6, but that seems to be a below ground route march from the Elizabeth Line platform. Any other taxi rank options say from Tottenham Court Road or Farringdon? Indeed, any other suggestions? Many thanks.

Gentle reply coming!:

Liverpool St station is the deepest station on the Elizabeth line, and the taxi rank in the road named Liverpool St (opposite pfm 6 as you describe it) is in fact a level above the main station concourse. So from the Elizabeth line it’s three escalators, about 6 stairs and a bit of a walk to get from train to cab.

I can’t think of a particularly easy way of getting from Heathrow to your hotel, especially with luggage, as there’s no obvious rail station at Bankside (depending exactly where your hotel is). Farringdon is the nearest Elizabeth line station but no immediate taxi rank. There’s numerous options hailing a cab, but none solve your question.

What may help is this link to the Transport for London website. I’ve put Farringdon in as an example but you can try other stations. Near the bottom it gives details of nearby taxi ranks to each station.

At Tottenham Court Road there is a Taxi Rank opposite the Dominion Theatre, which is as close as you are going to get to a station. It is only for 3 or 4 Taxis so may not have one waiting however.

Difficult to see, but it is where the Black Cab and White Van are parked in Google Street View

If not, you can keep going and turn right onto Great Russel Street where there are more Taxi Stands

You could leave at Farringdon then call an Uber (or Uber XL if you have a lot of luggage)

Alternatively, you could book a pre-booked taxi online once you are on the train (Uber, Bolt etc) and arrange to meet them somewhere. The east exit of Farringdon is probably the quietest street so easy for someone to wait for you, and not far from the river

Thanks for all the helpful advice. The Hotel is Hilton Bankside in Great Suffolk Street. Farringdon is the nearest Elizabeth Line station. I see where the rank is opposite the Dominion outside Tottenham Court Road Tube Station and that looks very handy. I guess my purpose is obvious - to avoid having to pay for a taxi all the way from Heathrow.

If you want a black cab, Paddington has a big rank which I think is fairly easy to get to from the Crossrail platforms.

If you're arriving at T5 it could be a long wait for a Lizzy line service

Personally, thinking about trying to keep this journey as practical as possible, I'd suggest changing at Farringdon for Thameslink two stops south to Blackfriars. There is a direct lift from the Elizabeth Line platform level to the southbound Thameslink platform and you can take any train from there to reach Blackfriars in around 5 minutes. This gives the least walking possible, especially if you aim for the rear of the Elizabeth Line train when you board at Heathrow.

Blackfriars station platforms are across the River Thames itself and the glazed side walls give a great view out through the City. Towards the rear of the train there are escalators to street level and there is a taxi rank in Queen Victoria Street. If luggage were less of a consideration, I would walk to the hotel from the southern exit of the station, but the layout here is a festival of stairs once you are out of the station so it's not the greatest option with heavy bags.

Echo the above - if you're not travelling today (strikes) then an easy change at Farringdon for a Thameslink to Blackfriars would put you 5 minutes walk away.

Thanks. Great suggestion. I can see the taxi rank on Google maps.

As a Heathrow regular, I would echo others’ advice:

1. Out at Paddington, taxi from there - there are always taxis available and it is all fully accessible
2. Out at Farringdon, easy walk down to Farringdon Road, hail a taxi in the street
3. Change at Farrington to Blackfriars, out at the back and get a taxi from the Blackfriars end of Queen Victoria Street

It's on the opposite side of the station from the Corossrail platforms, but there are usually taxis unofficially ranked in Praed Street outside the Hilton which you can presumably walk through from the station.

Another option.
There is step free change at Bond Street between Elizabeth Line and Jubilee Line.
Use the jubilee line either to Southwark which is 5 minute walk to the hotel or leave at Waterloo and get a taxi from the rank at Waterloo. There are lifts from the Jubilee line at all of these stations.

It's an easy 5-minute flat walk along Hopton Street from the southern ticket hall of Blackfriars to the Hilton Bankside on Great Suffolk Street.

Although it's slower than the Eliz Line, and might feel a bit crowded if you have an especially large amount of luggage [though the Eliz Line can be congested at rush hour too], for the least hassle of carrying things up and down at stations and intersections, I'd personally get the Piccadilly Line tube from Heathrow (which has lifts from all Heathrow terminals). Then I'd do an easy cross-platform interchange to the District Line at Barons Court (least congested place for the same-platform link) and continue east on the District Line to Blackfriars (which also has lifts up to street level); then out of the station to the taxis, for a brief hop over Blackfriars Bridge and on to Great Suffolk St on the south side of the river.

NB - if for any reason you did choose the Tottenham Court Road station option, that small cab rank opposite the Dominion, just over the road from TCR station, often has no cabs waiting on it - but that part of town is very cab-heavy and you'd almost certainly manage to hail one in no time at all.

Is there is a lift down to street level or is it "the festival of stairs"?
Lifts and ramp down to Hopton Street. Just short of 500m from Blackfriars Southern entrance to Hilton front door.

In the past I've done that change at Barons Court (In the distant past I worked at old Cadby Hall, just up the road) but was worried about trying to board a very busy city bound District Line train with luggage at peak time on a weekday afternoon.

That's a reasonable problem to be aware of! (Though less awful than ditto with a District going the other way...)

Get on a Heathrow Express for the (free) short hop to T2/3 and change (same platform) to the Elizabeth line there.

Defo this option @Turtle50. Liz Line straight to Bond St, then Jubilee to Southwark (only 7 mins, every 2 mins.)
Then 5 mins walk - saves you the hassle of a cab in Central London.

Another vote for EL to Farringdon, change for southbound TL, be at the front of the train, then south exit of Blackfriars (right by front of train) for a short and easy walk to the hotel. Lifts available throughout the rail portion, and then step free for the walk from the Blackfriars south entrance to the hotel, and a much easier interchange than EL to Jubilee at Bond St.

Yes this one. But make sure you come out the Eastern exit on the south side by the coffee shop. Then walk down Hopton Street to your hotel
