Hi, I've just seen this job on network rail and would like to know abit more about what it is?
I'm a welder in the oil and gas industry but would love to work on the railways!
Could anyone shed a bit more light on it? Day to day duties? What shifts? Career prospects? What do they look for? Money? etc.

Thanks in advanced.

coming from Petroleum Industry you would probably be snapped up due to the emphasis on Health and safety

money is ok with network rail.
Day to day duties wise you could be doing anything and everything. Work it on the basis if you haven't got a ticket to do it then you cant do it!

Shifts wise most work happens at night when the line is on a possision.

Thanks for the replys. How do the shifts work 4 on 4 off? Are they rotating?
Is there potential to develop your career? What's the money like?

I would like to do it, it's just a commute 30 mile commute.

Not sure if your aware but rail welding is a totally different type/style of welding to your mig/tig style welding its more of a casting style depending if you'll be doing thermite or railtech processes but both very similar

There is also the welding up of crossings on a fairly regular basis that's very skilled

Yes I've seen the videos of the casting/ thermite welding, it all looks very interesting.
My only issue really is how much it pays? (As it didn't say) and I'll have a 35 mile commute.
