Hi all,

I'll be starting a job near Holborn soon and I was wondering what the best way of doing Teddington to London Waterloo is? Obviously I'll take South Western Railways services straight there but should I be buying a monthly pass, an annual pass or just pay as you go with my contactless in order to save money? Thanks

Contactless fares from Teddington to Waterloo are:

Peak £7.30
Off Peak £4.50
there is a daily cap of £14.10

How are you going to get from Waterloo to your office? If you're going to use the Undergrounf then the fares on contactless become:

Peak £8.90
Off Peak £6.00
But the daily cap of £14.10 still applies

There is also a weekly cap that operates from Monday to Sunday which is £70.30 which you're unlikely to hit unless you're also travelling into zone 1 at weekends in addition to your work journeys.

A season ticket from Teddington to Waterloo which is valid on National Rail only is £54 per week, £207.40 a month, £2,160 per annum but you then have to factor in getting from Waterloo to your office.

If it were me I'd just use contactless, unless your office is walkable from Waterloo and you're going in more than three times a week.

Underground Waterloo-Holborn (if by Holborn you mean the area around the Underground station of that name) doesn't make much sense - there isn't a direct link, whilst there are several direct bus routes, on which it's only a few stops.

Yes, good point. A single bus fare is £1.65 and counts towards the daily cap.

Isn't the 521 bus from Waterloo to Holborn London's most frequent bus? Pre-pandemic it was but not sure what it does now.

The 521 is a great link but TfL have proposed to withdraw it as part of their central bus review, the consultation for which ended last week.

Under its proposals the link will be maintained by the 59 being diverted to High Holborn, but it won't use the Holborn underpass.

I thought it would be too good to be true!

It's down to every five minutes in the peaks - around half the frequency it used to have - and is already full again. It's empty in the evenings though. Time to go back to peak hours only? But I think selling the garage site at Waterloo has got more to do with it
[59 diversion] but it won't use the Holborn underpass
I hope not!
